Buy any gpu that you like. Nvidia has some good gpus, but so does amd. But to be fair the budget amd gpus do use lots of power and generate lost of heat. You should wait and buy the new radeon 5500 when its coming to market

I had the 1050ti for my FX 9590 build too, only just upgraded a few days ago to 3900x + Radeon VII.

 

Only reason I bought it was because the cryptocurrency situation ruled out an RX 570 for me at that time.

Probably the most similar instance would be the Titan X (Maxwell) vs. 980 Ti.

The Titan X came out - from what I remember - at 1200 USD. Then the 980 Ti came out a month or two later and had the same (within 10%) performance for the like half the price of the Titan X.

But it's not like AMD hasn't done this - best (and quite recent) example being the whole Frontier Edition letdown.

 

Thankfully these issues are quite uncommon.

You were fooled the moment you bought a card that was slower than the cheaper and older RX 570 to begin with.

Actually it was 10 months and the TITAN cards at least have peculiarities on it's driver level that makes them better for hardware acceleration tasks, all TITAN chips were high end Quadros that didn't pass the validation testing. So all in all it was still *okay*

 

nVidia dropped the ball with the Pascal ones where you had 2 different TITAN X's within the same generation now that was a rip off and yeah Vega "Founders Edition" was probably Radeon's shittiest release in recent history.

Ah, the numbers I remember are all whack..

But wasn't the Titan X Maxwell that last Titan card that had certain Quadro features enabled? I seem to remember that at least

 

Radeon VII was kind of a weird release too, at least if you look at it from a gamer's persespective (which Radeon thankfully never advertised it as being a gaming card).

Great compute card - but (almost) matched by a 5700XT in terms gamig performance..

But that was less of a 'scam' and more of an 'interesting release'. It having 16GB VRAM and all..

What changed from Maxwell to Pascal was the lost of the special Double Precision on Floating Points calculations, but the Pascal still had superior CUDA Acceleration for stuff like Premiere and the likes:

The Radeon 7 is an amazing card for those who need it's hardware acceleration capabilities, this card on OpenCL lands right between the RTX TITAN and the TITAN V, for those 2000 dollars cheaper it was a steal to any one who could justify it... This GPU is also an Instinct card that failed validations... so you had a 7000 dollars GPU sold for 690 dollars, amazing for work but mediocre for gaming

 

Still a much better card and buy than the Vega FE regardless.

 

Right now software has to improve it's Navi support... for OpenCL based acceleration the 5700XT is slower than the Vega64/FE and Radeon 7 due to the architectural changes... reason why we call it a gaming card specific, not advised for workstation at least for now.

They still do, 10bit color and stuff. CAD software doesn't buy this trick though, not a quadro? Let's slow down. Radeon Pro? Nah just a gaming card with blue paint, no rush

It's all part of the game.

 

You can get $100 to $150 for that $1650 and then just use that money to buy an RX 580 8GB. Although I do prefer Nvidia over AMD because I'm more familiar with the Nvidia control panel than I am with AMD's crapalyst. In which you could just go with a GTX 1060 6GB. Doing either swap is very possible to lose no money at all. Just make sure you know how and who to deal with and what model to go with when selling/buying used.

That's because Nvidia has no real competition (AMD acts more or less as "alibi competition") so this is nothing new,  they pull stuff like this all the time and get away with it (2060 vs 2060S as a latest example). They would *never* get away with it if there was an actual competitor on the market, because then people who got fooled like this would simply stop buying their products. 

 

So yes, what you can do is go all rebel and only buy AMD from now on (which obviously comes with a plethora of disadvantages like driver support etc) or just swallow the pill and start making smarter decisions as in not buying the next best Nvidia card as it comes out but do some research beforehand instead and wait for the inevitable "upgrade".

 

My personal motto on the matter is :

"May Intel save us all!"

Driver support? Whats that, dont they make drivers for games?
