I bought a new pc last June. I'm still wondering until now why this happens.

PC SPECS:

Intel Core i5-9400

GTX 1050 Ti

Kingston HyperX 8gb

Kingston SSD 240gb

WD Hard Drive 1TB.

Opened my fresh pc after installing Windows 10. The first software I installed is the AVAST ANTI-VIRUS (Downloaded from their website). After installation I went to the documents folder, I get an error that is saying "Specified path is missing" or "Can't open the specified folder" something like that. I tried to restart my pc because I'm assuming that will fix the problem. After rebooting, I tried to open My Documents and other folders same error occurs then goes the blue screen of death. I tried to restart again but blue screen of death keeps appearing. Tried to format my pc, then tried to install Avast again same problem. Can someone explain why that happened?

* After that incident, I installed Avira anti-virus, works well for me until now. Did'nt encounter any problem.

Did you update Windows to 1909? Avast is making the lives of everyone who upgraded with it installed absolutely wonderful right now. That's probably your issue.

Side note: f**k Avast. F**k all modern anti-virus software, really. If you're running on Windows 10, letting Windows Defender do its thing and making sure to apply a condom to your ethernet cord and/or wifi antennas before trying to download Libyan military documents, Russian bank ledgers or German schizer porn, you're good.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

I use Avast Internet Security myself, never an issue.

Is your Windows copy legit? Some A/V's get funky when it's not.

It's possible Avast detected something, or multiple somethings, in those folders and quarantined them. Did you check the Virus Chest?

What exact folders was it happening to? Just the folders such as My Documents, Photos, Videos, Music, etc? If it's only those folders, that sounds like there's something wrong with the file libraries in Windows.

Didn't know this about Avast and Windows. Do you have any more details?

I never update Windows so maybe that's why I never have problems and don't hear about things like this.

Eh. I mean you're not wrong honestly. But I'm someone who goes to sketchy places on purpose, and Avast Internet Security has saved my literal ass more than a few times.

Yes to those folders. Also If I open Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge, it automatically close right after I opened it.

Honestly, anti-viruses aren't that helpful imo. I have a friend who works for malwarebytes, and he doesn't use an anti-virus. His recommendation to me was basically don't do anything stupid.

I dont have one either. But if he is going to use one, use one that actually works well

Interesting. Makes you wonder if Microsoft is to blame, changing things under the hood of the OS that the software and hardware companies can't do anything with. Or if the software and hardware companies are just being incompetent.

WHY!!!

WHY AVAST???

it is useless against malware, spyware etc. the only things that are ACTUALLY worth using is bitdefender and kaspersky.

What makes you say that? As someone who will purposefully try and download very infected files, I've yet to actually get anything on my system unless I force it through (mind you, I don't do this on my main pc. I use a "burner" laptop for this stuff and I don't use it for anything else). I've been using Avast Internet Security since 2009 or 2010.

Very strange. Well as stated before, it is a confirmed Windows 1909 and 1903 version issue with Avast, AVG, and some other hard/software items. Not sure which side needs to make changes, but likely the hard/software companies.

I'm on 1903 using Avast without issue, I have yet to try 1909. I always wait on major updates.

Why not just use a VM or a burner laptop?

I do use a burner laptop. It's for, *ahem* not so legit copies of software, movies, tv shows, music, books, etc. If I'm desperate, I download whatever I can find and pick a part what gets downloaded. If it contains what I want, sweet. But there's gotta be a catch. Most of the time Avast can figure it out for me. Sometimes it's a false positive, but usually Avast is correct when it detects something.

I'm something of a file hoarder so I try and keep what I download so I don't ever have to do it again. But I only keep what isn't fishy/infected.

Well a friend has just updated to Version 1909 using Avast Pro and he seems fine.

So if it is Avast connected then its not affecting everyone.

That's not really how it works.

Compromised ad code can infect you even from the most reputable of sites. Compromised commenting systems, infected WordPress or Joomla installs (hell, even site's like Staples and USA Today use WordPress), etc etc.

Or you know, the hundreds of millions of people that work with Office and Outlook. There's no real way to magically know if the spreadsheet or word document sitting in your inbox is infected.

The list goes on, and Windows Defender is among the worst in the industry in terms of detection rates and performance impact according to testing firms like AV Comparitives.
