Which of these 144Hz Budget monitors should I get?

Hello all,

With Black Friday coming up, I think its finally time to upgrade my monitor. After two days of research I've come across the following Monitor options within my budget:

  • IPS - AOC 24G2U @ 185,-
  • IPS - AOC 27G2U @ 232,-
  • VA - AOC C24G1 @ 159,-
  • VA - AOC C27G1 @ 199,-
  • New TN - AOC G2590PX @ 199,-
  • New TN - AOC G2590FX @ 179,-
  • New TN - Iiyama G-Master GB2560HSU @ 199,-

* Note: "New TN" indicates the newer generation 24,5'' panels with better color representation.

Games I play:

  • Primary game: Apex Legends (FPS)
  • Secondary game: Final Fantasy XIV (Fast-paced MMORPG)
  • Other games: Borderlands 3, Control, SWJ: Fallen Order, The Witcher 3, etc.

My (hopefully) relevant setup specs:

  • CPU - Ryzen 5 2600X
  • GPU - AMD RX 5700XT
  • RAM - 16GB DDR4 @ 3200 Mhz
  • MON - LG29UM67-P (21:9)
  • DIS - Sitting about 70cm away from screen atm.

Personal findings so far:

  • AOC 24G2U is the most recommended one I can find, but really high lowest brightness which is terrible for low-light conditions. The 27'' version is much better in that area.
  • 27'' are unfavorable due to pixel density. (Does it really matter that much?)
  • The Iiyama has best color reproduction of the nTN panels.
  • The VA panels are the only Curved models.
  • The AOC models have the best stands and features, excluding the FX version.

I legitimately don't know which panel to go for. I went for a 21:9 screen before to just have more real-estate for productivity. But lately, since I've gotten into Apex Legends a whole lot, I really notice a difference between playing on a 60Hz at home vs 144Hz at a friends house. Given that 144Hz at 21:9 is way out of my budget, 16:9 is the logical step up while using my 21:9 as a media monitor and my research led me to these options.

Unfortunately the longer I do research, the more models I find that I can add to the list. So I'm trying to decide quickly before the list gets even longer. I've also looked at the MSI Optix models, but those have very varying test results with a lot of Over/Undershoot, so I omitted them from the list.

Here's to hoping you guys can make a decision for me, because I'm fairly sure I'm losing sleep over this.

I'll never buy a 27" screen in 1080p again. It was a horrible experience, and I got rid of it after a couple of days of use.

I'd go with the 24G2U, which is actually the same monitor I recommended to a friend last night.

That's very well said...if you want 27'' or bigger, step up to 1440p resolution.

I had 27" 1080p AOC AG272FCX6 and 24" AOC 24G2U side by side some time ago, I still preferred 27" one. But considering price difference 24G2U is better bang for buck.

Switching from 1440p 32" to 27" 1080p was difficult, but not horrible, just seemed blurry. Now I'm used to it and don't actually mind. Better than 32" 1080p.

I bought the LG Ultragear 24GL600F-B about a month and a half ago and I really like it. I've played a decent amount of Apex on it and looks great. Its at 140 on amazon right now (the name is linked to the amazon page). I would definitely check it out if you want a budget 144hz monitor that looks aesthetically nice and performs pretty damn well.

I actually bought the 24G2U just now based on your recommendation. I've installed 6 other FPS games just to enjoy the fluidity coming from a 60Hz display haha. Thanks for making the choice for me.

I'm kind on the same boat, my choices right now are (prices are local, europe):

AOC 24G2U - 170€

- AOC G2590FX - 170€

- AOC G2590PX - 250€

I'm only getting opinion after opinion to get the 24G2U specially at this price but I was wondering if the image quality is better on a G2590FX or PX option? I actually have budget for more but this is a 2nd monitor just for gaming and I have an 1660 Super so probably not useful to get a 1440p display. I've never had a 144Hz monitor and gaming is like 3 times per week :)

It seems too cheap to be true. Is there any display until 300€/$ that has noticeable better quality or should I just get an 24G2U because it's pretty good?

So I've been watching a ton of videos and read a boatload of reviews. I honestly feel the 24G2U is the overall best option. I don't get the price difference for your 2590X's though. The FX is literally the PX without some fancy stand and USB hub. They're the exact same panel etc which should not warrant an 80 Eur difference.

That said. I checked some reviews earlier today, and while the nTN, as I call them, are a lot better for color reproduction, they still have the blown out bottom area and underlit top area. The 24G2U doesn't have that due to being IPS. The latency/input lag between the 24G2U and 2590PX is also pretty immeasurable. The only perceivable issue I had with the 24G2U was its inability to go to very low brightness in nits, however I checked my current monitor and its actually on near full brightness with a higher cdm than the lowest possible option on the 24G2U, so I was being dumb.

Seeing your price difference, I honestly don't think the nearly inconceivable difference between the TN and IPS latency is worth the 80 Eur. I'd definitely go with the 24G2U.

The price is probably some random promotion that is affecting the cheaper ones and not the 250€.

From what I read I also get a strong feeling about the 24G2U. My only doubt is that I really can spend a bit more money (and I like things to work, not cheap unreliable stuff) but it really seems that there isn't anything much better than the 24G2U until the 300€ mark. the other IPS 144Mhz panels I have here are already 350€ and only come in 27''.

It's a bit puzzling why this 24G2U is so cheap. They surely could have made it 100€/50€ and still probably sell like hotcakes :D:D

My current set up is pretty similar to yours.

There's an AOC  C32G1 currently on a black friday sale on Amazon here in the UK for the same price as the 24G2U, it's a curved panel 144hz and a whopping 31.5" vs the 24" the only real difference I can see is that one is curved and the smaller one is flat.

I've got the 27" version of this monitor myself which I also got in the black friday sales... I actually bought 2 but had to return one due to transit damage and am actually considering the bigger one when the refund comes through (if it's still on sale)

Plus I'm betting it overclocks like mine does... I'm currently running at 1440p/144hz without any issues at all... lovely smooth gameplay and freesync for my 5700XT.  After gaming on 75Hz for the last couple of years and before that just 60hz... It's a lovely little upgrade.

System 1: Gigabyte Aorus B450 Pro, Ryzen 5 2600X, 32GB Corsair Vengeance 3200mhz, Sapphire 5700XT, 250GB NVME WD Black, 2x Crucial MX5001TB, 2x Seagate 3TB, H115i AIO, Sharkoon BW9000 case with corsair ML fans, EVGA G2 Gold 650W Modular PSU, liteon bluray/dvd/rw.. NO RGB aside from MB and AIO pump. Triple 27" Monitor setup (1x 144hz, 2x 75hz, all freesync/freesync 2)

System 2: Asus M5 MB, AMD FX8350, 16GB DDR3, Sapphire RX580, 30TB of storage, 250GB SSD, Silverstone HTPC chassis, Corsair 550W Modular PSU, Noctua cooler, liteon bluray/dvd/rw, 4K HDR display (Samsung TV)

System 3 & 4: nVidia shield TV (2017 & 2019) Pro with extra 128GB samsung flash drives.

Hello all,

~~SNIP~~

I would highly advise you only consider monitors that have been tested and reviewed.

i personally keep tabs on rtings.com and tftcentral.co.uk for review and test results.

basing a decision on specs alone is a recipe for disappointment as specs dont give u all the information u need.

Oh I definitely agree. All of the mentioned monitors I've read plenty of reviews and watched videos on.

Yeah at that pricepoint there really isn't much on offer that isn't sketchy. The closes thing I could find was the Iiyama G-Master GB2760QSU coming in at 329 eur for me.
