Hello to all,

i am currently looking to upgrade my PC.

The current specs are:

GPU: GTX 1060 6gb Zotac

CPU: Intel i5 3550

CPU-Cooling: Alpenföhn Brocken

Motherboard: MSI Z77A-G43

Memory: 16gb DDR3

Storage: 250GB Sata SSD Samsung Evo 850 and 1TB Hitachi HDD

Power Supply: 550W LC6550 v2.2

Monitor: 1080p 144Hz 1ms

A few other things worth noting as well. My motherboard has two PCIe slots for the graphics card. One it PCIe Gen 2 and one Gen 3. Unfortunatly the Gen 3 slot only fits the graphics card loosely. What i mean by that is that the GPU disconnects from time to time which is really annoying so i switched to the Gen 2 slot.

Since Black Friday is coming up i am looking to upgrade. I mainly want to fix the Gen 2 slot problem and also want to upgrade my CPU. Now i know that a new Motherboard would mean upgrading CPU and RAM as well.

So far i was thinking about going for the Ryzen 5 3600, Aorus Elite x570, and 16GB of DDR4 3600 CL16 RAM.

I know that the x570 might be a little bit of overkill, but i want a nice motherboard that i can work with for future upgrades (e.g. PCIe 4.0). Plus i read that the new Ryzen CPUs perform best on a x570 board and the "sweet spot" for RAM is supposed to be 3600MHz.

Not sure if the 550W Power supply is enough when going to a more powerful CPU.

I am mainly gaming on this machine with the exception of occasional CAD work.

Frequently played games are: Rocket League, Singleplayer games like The Witcher III, Middle Earth-Series, Apex Legends and I'm looking forward to playing Cyberpunk 2077.

I would greatly appreciate your input since i am no expert on this topic, except for half-read articles and Youtube videos.

Cheers from Germany,

DaYn95

depends on thee psu. 550W is enoguh, but if the psu is old and not good quality, you should replace that as well.

Thank you for your quick reply!

Just found out its a LC6550 v2.2. It definitly is an older model, don't know how to tell if its a quality PSU or not.

Looking at the PSU tier list on this forum, the LC psu's are under Tier E - Dangerous in multiple scenarios. So I would definitely recommend changing it.

Also, when replying, either hit reply or use @ "username" so that people get a notification.

@boggy77 alright. Thank you for your feedback! What PSU would you recommend? Is there a special manufacturer you think makes great PSUs? Since my next upgrade would be a new GPU in the future, would you recommend getting a 650W PSU instead of the 550W?
