"Upgrade" to i7 or upgrade completely?

So I have a Haswell build. Current CPU is an i5 4690 GPU is GTX 1060. I'd like to "upgrade" to the i7 4790. Do you guys think that the i7 is stil viable in 2019/2020? I use my system for mainly VMware workstation testing and some gaming.. at 1080p. Or shall I get a new Ryzen system?

Just save up for the R5 3600, you'll certainly end up paying too much just to get HT... it's not worth it.

 

Used Intel processors are pointless now that you usually can grab a B450+Ryzen 5 for not much more but always getting a huge performance boost.

The motherboard might be insufficient for a R9 3900X and alike if you ever feel like upgrading to a higher core count CPU but for the R5 3600 it will work fine enough, it's a solid system that should outperform the current i5 4690 on just about anything.

 

I would still just buy the parts separately as these combos don't really bring any value to the table, all parts seem to be on their normal pricing... a MSi Tomahawk B450 is notable better and one thing to be wary is that this combo is likely giving you a 1x16GB memory stick which would be terrible since Ryzen needs dual channel memory.
