So my friend has a daughter who like minecraft.

the thought was that a Minecraft server is something not every grade school kid has and my friend has spare old PCs lying around.

the baddest unused machine he has is a 3770k with a 4 pipe plate cooler, (it looks ok. May need repaste) with  4x4 1333 ddr3 for 16gig ram, an asus p877-V motherboard, and some mechanical hard drives of unknown size.

its stock atm.  We can throw an overclock on it I suspect but it won’t be massive.  It’s got a windows 10 liscense.  There are several older GPUs available, but the biggest is a 7950.

it beats minimum spec, but doesn’t hit maximum spec particularly in GHZ.

How good would it be at it?  What can be expected?  What does it need?

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

Will it just be a server or also be used for playing?

If it's only a server, no GPU needed and it's absolutely overkill for a handful of people but hey, if that's what you have laying around, why not?

If you want my attention, quote meh! D: or just stick an @samcool55 in your post :3

Processing power usually isn't a problem with Minecraft servers (that CPU should be more than capable anyways), you just need a lot of RAM and a good internet connection.  If you're running the latest vanilla Minecraft, it's usually suggested to assign 250-500MB per player and if you're running plugins and mods you'll need to assign more.
