Motherboard and M.2 compatibility

Go to solution Solved by minibois,

It does support that SSD. Be sure to update your BIOS though, as the support was added later on.

Can't confirm if it supports booting from that drive though, as that is not clear from any official or unofficial information.

Personally I wouldn't bother with NVME though; your board will limit the drive to PCIE 2.0 X2, which is up to 1GB per second max.

SATA vs. full speed NVME is already not that noticable of a difference (depending on what you do with your PC) and with this speed cap even less so..

Personally I would either get an M.2 SATA drive (keeping in mind 2 normal SATA ports will be disabled) or just a normal SATA SSD.

Hi, my parents have a very slow computer. They use an HDD and I was thinking about upgrading it with an SSD. Any SSD would improve the situation a lot, but I was thinking of maybe going with an M.2 SSD.

They have an ASUS Z97-P (https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Z97P/) motherboard. That board have an M.2 Socket 3 interface. Will any M.2 SSD work with that or do I need to find an M.2 SSD with a socket 3? I was looking at Kingston's A2000 series (https://www.kingston.com/en/ssd/a2000-nvme-pcie-ssd#specifications) and on its specifications, it says "NVMe™ PCIe Gen 3.0 x 4 Lanes". Is that compatible?

Any help I can get is appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

I like to look at the socket where the m.2 plugs into

.which seems to have the correct slot when you compair it to the m.2 ssd you were looking at

as there is also this kind

to be perfectly honest i am not sure of the difference between them but when i got my m.2 drive i made sure that the slot was the correct one and it seems to have worked lol
