Overclocking old i7 2700k

Hello. I am new to LTT forum and I have a question for older cpu and overclock. I bought i7 2700k long time ago, but I never overclocked it properly because I had stock cooler on it. I did try some modest overclocks, but cooler never allowed it of course and temperatures went up fast and started throttling performance of PC overall. I am now buying used Gtx 1070 (I hope my cpu wont bottleneck it too much) and I want to do some higher overclock compared to what I did before. I am aiming around 4.5 Ghz. I did manage to get this frequency or near it on stock cooler even, but temps went up and throttled it, and I didnt want to fry my cpu, I just wanted to test it out.

 

So, my main question are, what is good cooler option for i7 2700k? I would maybe even buy Noctua, but I am not sure if it would fit on my old motherboard. My motherboard is older gen, Asus z68 V-LX. I dont know if this cooler would fit on it, especially chunky one from Noctua like NH D-15. Another question is would a good cooler stop thermal throttling and performance loss? Would my cpu bottleneck my gtx 1070 a lot? I am planning to buy entirely new PC next year (and would just keep the cooler for new setup also), but till then I want to use this older setup.

The cooler mounting frame hasnt changed from socket LGA 1156 to 1155, 1150 and 1151. In other words, if a cooler fits Coffee Lake, it will fit Sandy Bridge. Worry about the case's CPU cooler clearance and the exposed VRM on the board instead. I wont try overclock this.

You wouldnt try overclocking on this motherboard?

VRM will cook before your CPU does. P8Z68 Pro is what a good Z68 board should look like

I found one cheap used P8Z68 Pro board from Asus. It is Asus P8Z68-V Pro motherboard. I assume this one should be better for overclocking? And thanks for your answers Jurrunio.
