Potentially deaf, "derpy but not dumb", and blind.

 

I'm sitting infront of a 9900KF, and a 2080TI both running at stock.

 

Overclocking frightens me due to sensitive little flowerness.

 

Wondering how much improvement does overclocking actually get me?

 

I'm sure it's been featured before but would anyone else like an apples to apples "Stock / Auto OC / Finniky OC / Lol N2O OC comparison?

 

Or did I miss a video?

well, in gaming probably not a lot. In computational tasks it's 1:1 really. Means, A CPU at 2ghz performs a test in 2minutes, then the same CPU at 4ghz will do it in 1minute.

nowadays, a 5% OC on a CPU is considered amazing. Computational tasks like rendering etc will be 5% faster if you have a 5% overclock. Increase in game FPS would probably be even lesser.

Theoretically overclocking should provide a linear increase in performance. That is, if you overclock the CPU/GPU by 10%, you should get an up to 10% increase in performance. However, this only applies to tasks that are CPU/GPU bound, rather than I/O bound.

Depends on the game. The gains are usually within 10-15%, rarely more (especially with CPUs like the 9900KF or Ryzen 3rd gen which are nearly maxed out from the factory

I'd be facinated to see if that bears out. How much does RAM speed come into it etc. or can you move a bottleneck by overclocking a component.

 

I've been itching to get back into 4k video work and after effects. multi year spell with a DellXPS laptop has meant I've had to find other hobbies.

 

The nastiest real world task I can think of is image stabilisation in aftereffects. I expect if the diff is only 5 or so % then I doubt I'd notice it, but still I paid for a cpu that can hover around 5ghz, is it worth trying to push it that hard?

 

Maybe the real question is how easy is it to brick £/$/€ 2500/3500 worth of kit by not knowing what you're doing?

There's always going to be a bottleneck somewhere. So yes, increasing the performance of the bottlenecking component moves it elsewhere.

A lot less than it used to.  The issue in part is that there is a physics barrier of ~5ghz for silicon. It can not even always be reached. Non overclockedd CPUs of, say, 3 ghz could

not uncommonly be pushed to 4.5 ghz. A 50% jump.  Even though it was harder to do it was still very worth doing.  CPUs are being released now though that can get very near 5ghz stock and there is nowhere to go even though doing it is much easier than it used to be.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.
