I'm trying to build a gaming pc with an existing computer for my son.i have a Dell OptiPlex 990 sff

i7-2600 @ 3.4 GHz

8 GB DDR3

1 TB HDD

If someone could help out with a parts list of what I'll need now and maybe for upgrades as I get the money it would be most appreciated.

Parts list so far: recommendations welcomed

what kind of games will he/she be playing?

if anything maybe an extra 8gb of ram

the sff case kinda puts a graphics card out of the question, unless the holes in the oem mobo line up to an aftermarket case

Just simple games at the beginning like minecraft but I would like to upgrade it to play games like fortnite or starcraft 2 but I know nothing of what these games actually require

oh, yeah i would upgrade ram with another 8gb, check your speed so you make sure you get the right speed of ram to match the existing 8gb, like amdorintel said the case limits gpu's

Yeah I was trying to do some research and find a case but I'm so new to this and there is so much misinformation on the internet I couldn't find anything. Some info is saying a low profile graphics card would work but I'd rather find I bigger case and a regular sized graphics card.

You will need a new board if you want a bigger case. That line gives off errors and annoying case fan prompts when using a custom case.

Basically, you're stuck with a 1050 Ti LP.

With a new board, power supply and case can I just strip everything else from the optiplex and have a working pc or would I need to buy more parts?

Yes. You'll want to get an SSD though. They can be had for as little as $20 USD and really helps with system snappiness.

AliExpress is a good place for older motherboards. They're a legit site, and are usually cheaper than eBay and local markets. Make sure you don't buy one of those shady Chinese generic boards, though.

Ok cool is there any boards that aren't compatible with the i7?(if that's even a thing)

Not really, they're rare, but you may want to consider a B75 board over a H61 board for the USB3 support.
