I am currently using a brand new E495 thinkpad.

And here are the specs:

Ryzen 5 3500

8GB of 2666 Hz RAM

256GB of NVME SSD

But when it comes to day to day performance I think the machine is a bit slower then it shoud. (Maybe this is me imagining things.)

For example watching twitch.tv using chrome the CPU usage is sometimes 35% high, also sometimes the fan starts to kick off.

And the swap usage normally is at 70%-80% if I keep using the machine more than 30 minutes.

RAM usage is about 70%. (I understand that Ryzen CPU uses 2GB of RAM for internal GPU)

How can I improve its performance by tweaking its software as well as hardware?

I've heard people said Lenovo actually limited the wattage of this processor. And if you use RyzenAdj you can free up some of the performance.

https://github.com/FlyGoat/RyzenAdj

I don't know where to check.

  • I have updated the BIOS to the latest one using the official BIOS update tool.
  • I am going to add in another stick of RAM which is identical to the one I am using. (both samsung, 2666mHz)
  • What else can I do???
  • What benchmark tool I can use to compare performance before and after???

Here's a few comments about this laptop and its source: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-ThinkPad-E495-Laptop-Review-Inexpensive-office-device-with-a-lot-of-power-but-without-keyboard-illumination.434877.0.html

If it is not broken, let's fix till it is.

You don't need to tune anything with E495 since the STAPM limit is 25w which is considered high

This is very crucial. Though you don't have to buy the exact RAM - same capacity, frequency and timings will usually work. Also 2666MHz is not supported for Ryzen 3rd gen mobile APUs - max is 2400MHz (2666 will downgrade to 2400 automatically)

How he knows that it's running at 1866MHz? No proof.

And for the memory latency - it's a known issue with Ryzen, even in desktop CPUs. So nothing special there. 11W TDP is false reading from hwinfo.

Desktop specs:

so translate everything into English is that I got one more stick of RAM and that's it??

Here is the new info after instaling another stick of ram:
