Hi All,

I've just rebuilt and upgraded parts of an old gaming PC i had lying around and i need some help with RAM speed and some advise on a new monitor (2 Parts)

My Specs:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600 6 Core Socket AM4 3.4GHz CPU Processor *(NEW)*
CPU Cooler:Cooler Master Hyper 212 RGB CPU Cooler – Black Edition *(NEW)*
GPU: RX480 8GB (Reference Card )
MOBO: ASRock B450 Pro4 AM4 ATX Motherboard *(NEW)*
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x 8GB) DDR4 3200MHz Memory Black *(NEW)*
PSU: Corsair CX650 650W Power Supply *(NEW)*
SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 2.5in SATA SSD
Case: NZXT 510 *(NEW)*

Part 1. I believe my RAM is only running at 2400MHZ as this is what is displayed on Speccy. I haven't touched anything in the bios and am not sure if i need to be overclocking anything? or have to change some settings around to reach its 3200MHZ capacity (I've never had an AMD CPU before and i understand there something called infinity Fabric? but im not sure if its related)

Part 2. I've been looking at upgrading monitors going from a 1080p 60hz to the 1080p 144hz Optix mag271c 27in monitor. I'm cautious to do so because of my lacking GPU, I'm worried i will not get the best use out of the monitor. The games i mainly play are CSGO, Overwatch, Apex, FN and LOL but i'd like to ability to play a few AAA games at decent quality.

Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales are around the corner so I'm hoping to get a deal on a 144hz monitor somewhere, but id like some suggestions on 144hz monitors and potentially a GPU upgrade.

Any suggestions regarding my Ram/Monitor would be awsome!

Cael

1.

RAM defaults to fairly low speeds to ensure compatibility. This goes on Intel and AMD systems alike. You have to set the memory to the higher speeds yourself, either fully manually (which can be complicated) or via a stored profile. Those are usually called XMP in BIOS, though on AMD systems it technically should be called DOCP. Same thing though, you enable XMP/DOCP and pick the speed profile and it usually works.

DDR4-3200 is right at the upper limit of what Ryzen 2000 chips can do though, so YMMV.

2.

A lot of those games are not that demanding and you'd get a lot out of 144Hz. At 1080p your RX 480 isn't that bad, and Freesync means you'll have a nice smooth experience even if you do drop a little lower (100Hz/100FPS is still quite smooth).

The fact that you play those specific games at 60hz hurts to think about. Those games are made to be played at high refreshrate and you can run them fairly easily with a 480 at high frames. You can always lower settings a bit to hit higher fps as well.
