So I think my laptop is using it's intel integrated graphics because when I right click on the desktop it shows intel graphics settings instead of the nVidia which should be appearing.

The laptop is using GT 940M, how would we know if the laptop is using the dedicated gpu?

Are you on battery or plugged in? Most laptops won't use the dGPU on battery.

Hey, we just noticed when we forced the control panel to start, it said there was no nvidia gpu connected to the display. How do we make the laptop use the nvidia GPU?

Does Task Manager or GPU-Z or Device Manager see the dGPU?

Did you try reinstalling the GPU drivers? (https://www.nvidia.com/Download/driverResults.aspx/153946/en-us)

1. Open the "Nvidia Control Panel".
2. Select "Manage 3D Settings" under 3D Settings.
3. Click on the "Program Settings" tab and select the program you want to choose a graphics card for from the drop down list.
4. Now select "preferred graphics processor" in the drop down list. (You can see what the automatic option is listed as global setting) If you want to use the dedicated graphics card, select High-performance Nvidia processor.

We can't open the nvidia control panel to begin with, when we open it from the source file on the C drive it says there is no detected display adapter

Go into the BIOS of the laptop (usually F2 or Del) while the computer is booting. Check to see if there is an option to disable the discrete GPU.

940M is about the same performance as integrated graphics to begin with.

Install GPU drivers from the manufacturers website.  With Optimus, you will get intel GPU settings and NV GPU settings.

Check device manager to see if both display adapters are present and no devices are experiencing problems.
