I've had my CPU for about 4 and a half years now, and recently while playing The Outer Wolrds, I noticed some micro-stuttering, fired up Afterburner and found out my CPU (i5 4590) was at 100% while my 970 was at 90%, now I know its not a huge bottleneck, but as the years progress, games get more demanding and having more cores does help. Now my question is, should I hold on for a while longer for next generation of Intel/Ryzen 4000, or should I upgrade now to something like a 3600 or 3700X?. I mainly game and do some light streaming. Also my GPU (GTX 970) is getting a bit old, but I think I can get by till the next generation of cards hit the market. My primary concern is my CPU at the moment.

The future will always bring new and exiting hardware its just how long you're willing to wait.
But now since AMD is doing so well the competition is tougher then ever, so prices are good right now. But who knows in the future they might be even better.

But new CPU does mean new motherb oard and memory cus im guessing your current system does not have DDR4.

When i ask for more specs, don't expect me to know the answer!

Waiting or buying now is entirely up to you. If you find that the performance you're getting right now is not what you want, you can maybe wait for a good sale on a cpu and send your cash.

Or you can keep waiting for another generation. And another. And another..

It's really just up to you when you wanna. I like buying computer stuff and upgrading my pc's so I'd be doing it the moment I could

Yes, that is another concern of mine, even if I do find something like a 4790 in the used market, I doubt it would bring me a substantial difference, so basically a CPU upgrade would also mean an upgrade in motherboard and RAM

Yeah and IF you gonna upgrade, right now AMD is where its at. Lots of powah and less money then Intel asks regulry. So yeah i'd advise taking time and researching what you want/need.

That'd probably be the best route, yeah.

AM4 is pretty easy to get onto now though. The 2600 is cheaper than ever, 16GB of ram can be bought for ~$55 and B450 boards can be had for <80$

yeah it would...but this time don't make the same mistake...avoir 6c/6t CPU like the i5-9600K for example cause this will suffer exactly the same as your quad core does now in modern games within 2 years and probably less.

6C/12T is a minimum, and it's nice...should hold up fine for at least a couple years, maybe more...and AMD has great CPU's with multiple cores now at great price.

But for your graphics card i would wait for next gen stuff...RTX cards have been out forever at this point.

4C/4T processors will only not be a thing when:

  • It no longer performs to your requirements
  • It's just outright not supported. This is almost always because the application is using a new hardware feature, like an instruction, that the older CPU doesn't have.

6 core is a min spec for gaming in 2019

That's absolute nonsense. 6 cores are nice to have, not minimum.

You cant do multi tasking really well or decent on 4 core 4 thread. Few games are already push 4 core 4 thread to 100% usage.

If by multitasking you mean "I have Chrome up with 30 tabs, Discord, and a few other apps open", they won't actually use the CPU unless there's actually something going on.

If by multitasking you mean "I'm crunching a video while I play my games," all I can ask is "why?"

Because why not?

Like listening to a youtube video in the background while playing a game that pushes the cpu to max 100% will make game runs no good. 4 core 4 thread is no good but 4 core and 8 thread good.

Think 4 cores hasn’t been enough for a few years. But as the mainstream focuses on 60fps I can see why it’s taking people while to catch on.

Thinking they can keep throwing good cards in with weak cpu’s.

Learned that when cpu intensive games came out. A somewhat high end card bringing a 4790k to its knees and thus effecting gameplay too much.

More cores can afford the better.
