Hot spot issues on Vega 64

Go to solution Solved by Kingkems,

Figured out it was the thermal compound I was using. Switched thermal compound to something slightly better and noticed a 10c difference but I was already fed up with it so I ordered a Titan x pascal instead.

I've had my gigabyte Vega 64 for a while and I started to notice that my GPU would peg 100% GPU usage and the core would only reach 1100mhz. Core and memory were at 50c and when I looked at hwid the max hotspot temp was 110c. I tried replacing the thermal compound multiple times even going as far as going ham with the thermal compound but the temps didn't improve. I've tried thicker compounds and I still see the same result and now I'm thinking of running after a thermal grizzly thermal pad for CPUs because I have tried everything to improve my mounting but it ended in the same result. Now I'm reaching out to the community for suggestions on this matter before I pull the trigger on a $20 thermal pad. Also the card is a gigabyte oc edition. This is also not the first run in with this issue as I've had the same issues before with it black screening because the hotspot was hitting thermal shutdown. I fixed it before and the max I saw was 80c but the problem has surfaced again. Last resort will be 5700xt.

I know for a fact that Asus Vega 64s suffer from VRM overheating because the cooler has been milled to far and the heatsink doesn't make any contact with the VRMs at all. Its a known issue and the reason why I got rid of my Vega 64.

The fix is to get a 2mm thick thermal pad and install it over the VRMs so the cooler comes into contact with them.

Bear in mind that thermal pads are not quite as good as good heat paste so if you're replacing TIM with a pad on the GPU then keep an eye on it for a few days to make sure the pad can cope.

Main Rig:-

Ryzen 7 3800X | Asus ROG Strix X570-F Gaming | 16GB Team Group Dark Pro 3600Mhz | Corsair MP600 1TB PCIe Gen 4 | Sapphire 5700 XT Pulse | Corsair H115i Platinum | WD Black 1TB | WD Green 4TB | EVGA SuperNOVA G3 650W | Asus TUF GT501 | Samsung C27HG70 1440p 144hz HDR FreeSync 2 | Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS |

Server:-

Intel NUC running Server 2019 + Synology DSM218+ with 2 x 4TB Toshiba NAS Ready HDDs (RAID0)

I believe hotspot is the hottest spot on the die but I could be wrong so I'll check all my thermal pads but I doubt its the issue. All pads are good but it looks like my cooler isn't making proper contact with the card and I'll take a picture when I get home.
