Gigabyte AX370 Won't POST with USB Devices Plugged In

Long story short, my computer will no longer boot if I have USB devices plugged in. It starts like normal when they are unplugged, but if they are plugged in the boot freezes on the Gigabyte Auros logo.

The motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-AX370-Gaming 5 and the CPU is a Ryzen 1700X.

Here is what lead up to this issue and what I've tried so far:

1) I installed the 1909 update for Windows.

2) I noticed that all but 2 of my USB ports no longer worked.

3) I assumed it was a driver issue and reinstalled and updated my drivers such as the chipset driver. This solved the issue while in Windows and I plugged all my stuff back in to their correct USB ports.

4) After I restarted my computer it froze on the Auros logo, and it kept doing this until I plugged all USB devices and tried starting it again.

5) I cleared my CMOS by removing the battery but it made no difference.

6) I decided to update my BIOS since it listed "improved USB compatibility" as one of the improvements.

7) I updated it, and the problem persisted, so I updated it again to the latest version, but the problem is still there.

I am not sure what to do anymore. It seems like this started when I updated the chipset driver, but isn't that isolated to Windows? Or does it update the firmware too?

I had this issue with my ASUS board and turned out to be a bios issue.

A bios upgrade fixed the problem for me.

Thanks for the info. Sadly I am already on the latest BIOS but I'll keep an eye out for new ones. Maybe try installing an older version.

I don't know what the problem is unfortunately, so can't help there... but am pretty sure I've run into a problem similar to this and it was caused by a mis-match of controllers I think, at the time I was also getting USB disconnects/reconnects, updating drivers didn't fix (pretty sure they were Renesas?). I'm sure you've probably thought of it already, But a USB hub might help in this instance. At least you should then be able to use all your devices.

Right now I'll take any help/advice I can get.

Luckily the non-working USB ports now works so no USB hub is necessary. The problem I have right now is that I can't start my computer with a USB device plugged in. As soon as something is plugged in, it freezes at the POST screen. Sadly a USB hub won't fix that.

What do you have plugged in on USB? also maybe one of the USBs is getting a short or soemthing, can I suggest trying the USB ports one at a time until the fault shows, then try it with a hub if you have one handy.. if it still faults, take another USB out and plug the hub into that, then plug the rest of the USBs into the hub.

Also, do you have your BIOS on UEFI or CSM/legacy?  I've found that it is better to have in UEFI as it skips some checking during POST... never know it might help here.

I don't have anything special plugged in.

A USB hub (my monitor), my keyboard and my mouse. Nothing else.

I'll try unplugging things and see what happens. Maybe it's just one device that messes up, or maybe one port. I should probably test the ports that worked when no other ports worked.

It's in UEFI mode.

out f curiosity, what happens if you disconnect the boot drive? (if it's an easy thing to do) that would at least be able to determine if it's the windows bootloader having the issue or if it's the motherboard if it's able to get past POST and into the BIOS, though i would have thought clearing CMOS & updating BIOS would have fixed it.

That's a good idea too. Sadly it will be a pain in the ass since it's an M.2 drive which sits under my graphics card.

Might be worth testing if nothing else works.

EDIT: found a few threads of people having weird USB issues with that specific motherboard

do you have Any other devices plugged in that has any kind of bootable media on it? regardless of it the BIOS is set to boot from it? LinuxLive USBs, external harddrives with bootable installers, even bootable BIOS images? if so, try removing just those devices.

No USB devices with bootable stuff on them.

Looks like the MB also has an issue with powered USB hubs feeding power back into the motherboard, but you said you removed it?

Well it might be my monitor. It has a USB hub built in, and that hub is probably powered. The weird thing is that it wasn't an issue before. I'll try unplugging just that and see if it starts.

YESSSS!

This was the issue. Once I unplugged my monitor's USB cable it works even with everything else plugged in, and it's probably because of power being fed back into the motherboard. Now I just need to determine if I should keep the monitor unplugged (it's not like I use the monitor's USB ports anyway) or try and find a port they work in.

Thank you so much to everyone who helped.
