Z270GT8 shopping for CPU, 6gen or 7gen

Hello,

I am almost done getting the parts I need to build a gaming PC. Sadly, might need to upgrade my GPU, but Best Buy told me I will be bottle neck with the CPU I have and the MoBo.

I got four sticks of ram, 8GB each DDR4 at 3,000mhz. The MoBo claims it will do 3600 on overclock, but I am not looking at doing that for gaming.

The Mobo shows a Z270 intel chipset and will host a 1151 LGA i5-i7 6th and 7th gen. So I bought a 6th gen 6700 i7 3.40 base - 4.0GHz max CPU (used) thinking it will perform better then the top of the line 7th gen 7920 that has a 3.10 base and a 4.1 max for this chip set. IAW the intel website, there is nothing faster then that for the 1151 platform in the 7th gen chipset.

GPU I have a 1070, but I am thinking about selling it and getting the 2080ti. This is where the buy at Best Buy turned me away from the sale, saying it will bottle neck and I need to buy a new system. Then he proceeded to show me $2,500.00 systems.

What do y'all think. Am I the uneducated costumer in this case?

This whole statement is kinda bizarre, the fastest CPU for the 1151 socket and Z270 chipset is the i7 7700k, the i7 7920HQ is a laptop CPU and can't go into your motherboard (without some insane modding) but yeah your i7 6700 is still a good gaming CPU so we'll proceed with that information. The 7920 is only top of the line for mobile so let's forget about it.

there are cases where the 2080 ti will not be able to stretch its legs with the 6700, but that depends very greatly on the games you play, so what does your library look like?

also the RTX 2080 super is not exactly that far behind the 2080 ti but is significantly cheaper, you might consider that instead.

edit:

also did you mean to say that you intended to get a new CPU or that you already have the 6700? The title says "shopping for CPU" but you said you bought one in the body of the post.

Thank you for the response. The chip 7920 was quoted from the intel website, claiming compatibility with my socket type and under 95watts. I see where the mistake is now. Thank you.

my library is, BF1, BF5, Rust, World of Tanks. I’m a weekend warrior mostly with gaming.

I got the 6700 used from Facebook market place for $60.00. It is also untested... so I might be shopping for a working unit if it does not work. Lol. My luck, it will make a great dimmer knob for my dinning room light switch off it doesn’t work.

I don’t have 3k to poor in a system, but I also don’t want to build a brick.
