R6S community too toxic

Rakanoth

What do you think of R6S players in general? I come across way too many toxic players in this game. I am not sure why this game's community is like this.

Problems:

  • Griefers
  • Hackusations
  • Players constantly bad mouthing each other in chat in an extremely vulgar manner
  • many other stuff that I cannot think of at the moment

Yeah, its quite toxic.

As a new player I get blamed a lot for not knowing stuff that are "obvious" to them but not to me. I have no idea where to go when someone calls a location because I don't know the maps very well yet and they usually go crazy if I get lost.

And I am talking about playing the casual mode, not ranked mode. I only play ranked with friends so there its all right.

I never saw a popular competitive game with a good community. and I admit, I was part of the problem: I havent played dota 2 in 3+ years because it is unhealthy to me, for real.

Ultra is stupid. ALWAYS.

The combination of four things. Upbringing, technology, competition and what's inside their mind and body. And when the game has everything to do with grouping together to KILL the other groups, certain groups that play the game every single day are going to show you where they come from, what they're all about and what's inside them. If they were brought up to be respectful, they will show you respect. If they were brought up the opposite, then expect negative actions/behavior.

P.S. Drugs are obtained every second of every day. You're gonna run into the users somewhere. Grocery stores, gas stations, parks, online video game communities, you name it.

Most CoD players tend to be kids or "bros". So they're a little more toxic.

Online gaming in general makes people think they can say things and be behind a wall of anonymity. There's no real getting around that.

Think of it like YouTube comments; they probably wouldn't say that in real life.

I think your statement would be better if worded a bit more general.

"People in general are like that" would be enough. No need to go the media way of demonizing games.

On subject, OP, the way you get it online are basically 2 factors for me:

  1. A mass of people is always stupid
  2. Being online gives a sense of anonymity

To expand on the first one: less intelligent people tend to be more emotionally unstable. Combine it with the second point and you get a ticking bomb of rage in a form of a human being.

There are also 2 factors regarding human perception that come into play:

  1. We tend to avoid blaming ourselves (to feel good) so we subconciously look for the mistakes of others to avoid looking at our own
  2. Negativity bias

This has been a thing since VOIP became standard. And even with text chat. If you are too good for pubs, you hack. And in OW if player is having bad game, its everyone else's fault but theirs. I've been called toxic for defending another player against baseless whiners. And I usually get that kind of response as I don't like whiners, and don't pour my hearth and soul to every ranked game I play (since at my level those don't mean shit).

The core of the problem is devs and how they decide to monitor community. If they have ability to listen even reported games, or games which get 2-3+ reports of, that could make a difference. But for now its just telemetry and chatlogs. AFAIK.

They don't mean shit at any leval other than the highest one.

The only real reason for ranked system in any of the game is for a player to prove to a gaming org he's good enough to be a pro. That's it, nothing else.

Everything else is just subjective crap people use as means to rationalize why they put so much time and/or effort to get it.

My favourite one is braindeads using rank to prove their argument even though it's completely irrelevant in the discussion :D.

Unless something has significantly changed after I stopped comp gaming, ranked ladder isn't proof of anything. LAN and online tournaments are. Sure you can show that you have skills on ladder, but orgs are looking for more than that. They don't pick best of ladder, they pick person who suits the team, even in 1v1 games.

I believe there's a big difference between team games (like mobas or team shooters like CS:GO or R6S) and 1v1 ones like SC2, HS etc.

When it's the latter sure you can start joining smaller tourneys, prove your skill and maybe don't even look for a gaming org but rather some sponsors to join bigger tourneys.

With team games you either create your own team and try your luck in small tourneys or climb rank, make yourself a name there (as on the highest level you tend to play with the same people over and over) and thenget scouted or make your move and engage the org on your own.

Just compare history or players like Scarlett, Nerchio vs Topson, s1mple, Caps.

Why are you guys crying about toxicity in competitive games? Nobody is forcing you to play it if you can't take the heat. If you play like garbage for your rank, you're gonna get flamed. This is the case with every single game with competitive aspects and people playing to actually win, for example League of Legends, Overwatch, CS:GO, Siege, even Battlefield. Honestly, it's stupid how you can have a game rated for adults and not use power words or tell your teammates how things really are because muh safe space.

ALERT, ALERT! FLAMER DETECTED, FLAMER DETECTED!

We don't cry but rather constructively try to break down the matter at hand. Breathe and let that sink in.

3 hours ago, Underi said:

You fail to realize such behaviour brings nothing to the table except you blowing off some steam, right? Ever thought of figuring out why that steam was there in the first place? Clue: maybe you're the one not mentally fit to sort out what's happening and find a logic in there?

3 hours ago, Underi said:

If you play like garbage for your rank, you're gonna get flamed.

If you're in the same rank, you're nowhere near to judge. And if you're in the same ranked game, you most certainly are.

You also fail to recognize such behaviour exists out of ranked system. Why? Because some people are not mentally fit to deconstruct matter at hand nor they try to understand its core so instead they turn to emotions to be able to react in ANY way.

Advice for you and others of that mindset: listen to people better than you, aka pros, who said times and times again to not focus on mistakes of others but on yours own in order to get better. Flaming gets you nowhere, get that carved or something so you don't forget.

There's one more thing for you to remember: people make mistakes. Expect them.

On a not so bright side: even if you get better, climb higher, people will make mistakes in there as well. Those will be even more apparent to you since at this point you will be better and will be able to recognize them more accurately.

3 hours ago, Underi said:

No, it's your misconception and a popular belief which ruins the experience for both parties.

Flaming is not an integral way of competitiveness. Sooner you realize that, the better for you and your health.

Want me to prove that really quick? Do you imagine any competitive team to post good results in a toxic environment?

Maybe read something about proper feedback, that should be a good start.

And get yourself familiar with studies showing relation between criticism and performance if my previous question doesn't convince you.

Really hope expanding your knowledge is not out of your comfort zone.

You do realize there's a huge difference between 'using power words' and telling someone you 'bang his mother'?

Also, sorry for making it personal if it shouldn't be but in this format it will sink in better in any 'flamer' that reads it.

Yes and no.

You will see their miastakes anyway and it will most likely affect you cause we're people - beings with emotions.

What I'm suggesting is to realize that it's inevitable and will happen from time to time.

Learn to accept it and instead focusing on what miasteke others did focus on what you can do to either avoid it or fix it.

Deep down you know you make mistakes as well - make that your point of focus as it is the only thing you can affect.

Also remember that if you lose your calm you will perform worse as well. And if you really wan't to win, you have to try to carry each time. In one way or another.

And, as I mentioned previously, start with learning to give proper feedback. Believe me it will work wonders if instead of "you fu#%%ng cu&t, you lost us this game" you will say "Their jungler started on x side and you had no wards, please pay more attention to it next time" or "He was on A and on this map, in order to rotate to B as fast as he did he could've taken only route X. Please remember it's a possibility."

It will come full circle just as currently all this flaming goes full circle and if you tilt others you will be tilted as well.

Unfortunately we all do that and you don't have to be a narcissist. They just have it worse.

Solution is to understand that fact and keep it in mind to avoid bias as much as possible.

If its not a competition, toxicity tends to disappear.

leaderboards, PvP matches, timed achievements ..if a competition can be had ..toxicity inevitably arrives.
