os Does the operating system of a server matter

I wanna build a server which would be used by windows 10 pcs, do I have to install windows 10 on the server as well or will windows xp work as well? I'm quite new to servers

Last hardware that had XP support was at last decade. Depends on your application you might be fine with W10 or you might need Windows Server (depending on your ram and amount of cpus you got in that system) but I would suggest you to anything linux. Learn something useful.

Depends what you want to do with the server. Microsoft has dedicated server operating systems. 

 

Wouldn't advise XP for anything, it's completely out of support.

This. A server is just a computer that provides services to other PCs. The type of services you need should determine what type of OS you want.
