GPU fan randomly bursts to 100% speed under load

Here's my issue:

My GPU randomly bursts to 100% fan speed while gaming or under moderate to high load (NEVER in idle/low load). I have a Gigabyte RTX 2080 Ti Windforce (non OC version). The card is not overclocked, every setting in the Aorus Engine is set to default. The spikes in fan speed are only for maybe 2-3 seconds and come in intervals that do not show any pattern. Sometimes every 10 seconds other times it takes a few minutes for it to happen again. The fans can still be controlled via software and react properly to any fan curve changes (except for the bursts that also happen while changing fan curves) but the aorus engine does not show the fan speed, ever (as seen in the screenshot below). The issue is also not related to the target temperature set in the software (card maxes out at 85°C). This issue did not happen for the first 8 months since I bought the card.

Things I have already tried:

  • Clean install
  • Reinstalling Aorus Engine (I do not use any other third party software to control my PC's fan speeds or GPU clock)
  • Plugging the card back in or using another Slot
  • Manually setting the fan speed to a constant value
  • BIOS updates

I have no idea what else to try other than RMA-ing it and getting a replacement.

My specs:

R7 2700x

16GB 3200Mhz

Asus Strix X470

Gigabyte RTX 2080ti Windforce

Be Quiet Straight Power 11 750W

Probably not the reason  but do you have the latest nvidea driver I know it doesn't have to do with it but take a chance

Id try using MSI afterburner to set the fan curve if this software isn't working.

A custom fan curve can be applied, but it still bursts to 100% randomly.

On MSI Afterburner software?  Gigabyte isn't known for its GPU software.  As a second user with this issue have you tried another software?

Yeah, I only tried with MSI Afterburner. The curve works fine until the card reaches 72°C, at which point it suddenly bursts to 100% as if to prevent it from reaching 73°C, for some reason.

Sounds like a BIOS something that keeps it from hitting a thermal throttle limit?  Though I thought they could get hotter.

Thanks for the reply!

Hey all,

I know this thread is old. But I have a Gigabyte 5700 XT Gaming OC card and I have the exact fan spike problem. I was wondering if anyone was able to find a solution to this problem.

Cheers :)

It's probably there to prevent the GPU from getting too hot, eventually you need to throw fan curves out the window and just start flowing air through as fast as possible.

I have actually monitored GPU temperatures and it's around 70C. Even hotspot temperature is approx. 90C. I looked at multiple outputs from GPU-Z and none seem to indicate a reason for the fan spike. See the attached log file.

Hi guys, im having the same issues of the fan randomly spiking to 100% Fan speed. i'm using the Aorus RTX2080S OC Gaming.

I suspect is the card itself.

I've since tried all types of fan curves but it just goes 100% speed randomly.

:(

Any solutions?
