"Downgrade" from 49" 4k to 32" 1440p?

Hey guys this is my first post on the forum. I think last time i was in a forum of any kind was like 10 years ago. No joking but this question is messing with my head! The world of pc monitor is quite a messy and complicated one.

Sorry if my english is bad im from Argentina.

I have a Sony 49" 4k HDR TV that i use as a monitor since 2017. Last year it started to get purple spots in different places and now on days the whole TV has shifted to a purple hue. I'm trying to act as if nothing is wrong and keep using it but it is getting harder each day that pass by.
So i was thinking on buying a monitor to replace it. Would a 32" 1440p 144hz 4ms VA monitor be a good choice coming from a big 49" 4k tv? or will i regret the purchase in no time, and end up selling the monitor to buy a new 49 / 50 " 4k tv ?.
I mainly do gaming (not competitive), watch movies, and do some photo editing and 3d modeling every so often.
My system has a 4790k, 32gig of ram and a 980ti. (most of the times i run games at 1440p because the 980ti struggles quite a lot in 4k to reach 60fps)

Thanks to anyone that helps with my question

I'd go for an ultra wide rather than a 16:9 display

Does the TV still have a warranty?

Sadly the warranty ended a couple of months before the issues started.

The only ultrawides i can find in my country are 34 inch 1440p VA at 75hz or 1080p at 120 or 144hz.  But they are between 200 to 300 dollars more expensive than the 32" 16x9 option.

It depends, if you play shooters then you probably want a 1440p 144hz monitor, but if you most play RPGs I would go with a different tv.

I play shooters ever so often. But mainly i play sandboxy games, space scifi games, sports games (aka Rocket League).

The thing is i never had anything higher than a 60hz screen and i never saw a high refresh rate screen in person to see if is any good for me or is just a waste of money. So now that i need to change this TV i tought it could be the right time to jump into a high refresh rate monitor to see whats all about.

But if it is a 75hz ultra wide it might not be enough jump on fps no notice it?

How does the price compare to 1080p 240hz displays? As that'd be great...in the games that can actually run above 200fps anyways.

Would look basically the same aside from the TN Vs IPS panel, since the ppi is close to a 32" 1440p display.

Presumably you'd sit closer to the monitor, but I imagine the experience will be less immersive. Will it be too much for you to bare? Well, only you can know the answer to that; we're not you and everyone's preferences are different. I plan on picking up a 32" monitor as my interm monitor before I decide if I want a 38" ultrawide or 35" ultrawide with a higher refresh rate...if you're sitting at a desk, 32" is more than enough...but everyone's opinions will vary on that, and only yours matters, so...only you can really answer this question.

I have the Samsung CHG70 which is basically the same as the Samsung LC32JG50. It’s a really good monitor, but when I play RPG games I end up going for my 60hz tv over the 32” 1440p 144hz monitor. It’s just more relaxing kicking back with a controller than leaning into a monitor. That’s just my opinion though.

You might want to checkout the CHG70 and how it compares. The only difference I saw was that the g70 is like 50 nitts brighter than then g50.

I just checked and i can only find one used at U$D 200 more than the CJG50 new. But dunno if i'm comfortable buying an used monitor.

Does the fact that the CJG50 doesn't have free sync is a deal breaker? I don't know how usefull is in a 144hz monitor or if it would even work with my 980ti if it had free sync.

It needs a 10 series card or newer for freesync to work. I wouldn’t buy used or worry about it too much. I was just throwing it out there if it was a similar price.

@GECO if you are thinking of Samsung CGH70 or LC32JG50, take a look at Dell S3220DFG if it is available in your country.

I am looking for a 1440p 144Hz monitor myself and opened a post about it as well. Like you I do some photo editing, and game sometimes, not really into FPS, but more RPGs, Sandbox games, indie games, etc. This monitor has a Adobe RGB 80%+ color accuracy, so it is good for photo editing. Like someone, @SolarNova, said the pixel response time on this monitor is a bit slow, but if you are not playing competitively, you should be fine. Also, I quote from @SolarNova  "HDR color gamut and color volume. DCI-p3 especially", if you are doing any HDR gaming.

  • 3 weeks later...

Well i ended up getting the Samsung JG50. it was the only option available in the specs i was looking for.

But i got to say. I must be one of those slow brain people because i can't tell the difference between 60 and 144hz. Soo im feeling kindda bummed, because this feels more like a downgrade than anything... :(
