I have a Intel ssd in my strix hero 3 and I want to upgrade to the 1tb Samsung one I just got yesterday however I cannot seem to get it to boot from the new one no matter what I try any ideas?

Clone the old SSD to the new one.  Samsung magician is the tool you want to use.

Is Windows installed on it? If not, your motherboard probably just Kip's the empty drive.

But anyways, go into your BIOS and set your new SSD as a bolt drive.

You're gonna have to get Windows on it though. So either clone your current drive (not recommend) or reinstall it.

Make a USB drive with a Windows install on it (Google Windows Media Creation Tool), set your boot order to boot from that, install Windows on the right drive and set your boot order to boot from that ssd.

Should I leave it unformatted for that? I tried that and it said it will only install to gpt disks

Unplug all drives except the large SSD.

Install windows on the large SSD.

Make sure only that large SSD is on the boot priority list in BIOS.

When you plug your other drive in you should wipe it too.

Format before a fresh install?

No need, during the install you will format it.

Edit: not sure if it was implied but this is on a laptop

Tried, converted the disk to gpt but says it will only install to gpt and the drive is mbr

I think you need to back up and start from the beginning.

Have you booted from a Windows install USB, and attempted an installation on the new SSD?

Just tried that, says it doesn't support installing to USB devices and the drive has a mbt partition rather than a gpt partition. Even though I switched the ssd to a gpt partition

Perhaps I should try it on a actual flash drive rather than just an m.2 ssd in an external enclosure?

You need to take some screenshots of these messages and upload them here. Why does it say you're installing to USB?

Wait... I'm very confused. You're trying to install windows onto an M.2 drive inside a USB enclosure?

Or are you trying to create a Windows Install USB onto an M.2 drive?

To install Windows, you first create a bootable USB Drive using the Windows Media Creation Tool. Then, you plug that USB drive into the computer (along with the SSD you want to install onto), and boot form the USB Drive. Then you target the SSD, and go from there.

I have an ssd In a external enclosure and I'm trying to install Windows onto it, so yeah I thinks my situation is the latter

Okay.

So you took a USB Flash Drive (Eg: A Kingston DataTraveler), and you downloaded the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool, and you targeted that USB Flash Drive and created a USB Windows Installer?

Not exactly, it's just an ssd in an external enclosure with a USB c port

Okay. So you're not doing it correctly. You're skipping a step.

Before you can install Windows, you need to create a Windows Installer. You haven't done that yet.

And I need a separate flash drive to do this correct?

Yes. Or a DVD-R, since you could burn it to DVD instead - but a Flash Drive is the superior method.

Step 1. Download the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool

Step 2. Insert a USB Flash Drive

Step 3. Launch the Media Creation Tool, and select the aforementioned Flash Drive

Step 4. Use the Tool to create a Windows Installer USB Drive onto the aforementioned Flash Drive

Step 5. Shut down the computer

Step 6. Insert the USB Flash Drive into the computer, along with the SSD

Step 7. Boot to the USB Flash Drive

Step 8. Follow the on-screen instructions to install Windows, targeting the SSD. Make sure to delete any existing partitions on the SSD, if any exist (if none exist, just proceed)

Step 9. ???

Step 10. Profit.
