Hi All!  I need some help here.  My system is running a bit sluggish as of late.  I bought it used a few months ago, but the person I bought it from had it for something like 2 years.  In talking with him, the i7 5820k in the system used to be able to hit 4.6GHz stable.  Now it can barely hit 4.250GHz stable.  So, I'm looking to possibly upgrade my system.  I was wondering if you guys might be able to shed some light on this for me.  Looking at going with a RyZen 3700x or 3800x.  I don't know which one I want to go with......or if it's even worth it to upgrade right now.  Here's my current system:

CPU: i7-5820k OC'd 4.250GHz

RAM: 16GB 2033MHz

GPU: Zotac GTX 1080

MOBO: Asus x99-e

PSU: EVGA Supernova 650w Gold cert

Here's what I am looking to upgrade to.   Just replace the 3800x with the 3700x in this parts list.

Is it worth it to upgrade from my 5820k?  Which CPU would be better for Ryzen?  Is the 3800x worth the extra $50ish compared to the 3700x?

no, it's just clocking higher but you can manually do that too.

Why exactly do you want to upgrade? Is it not performing like you want it to?

Yeah, just under performing and starting to have random mini freezes.  I've seen a bunch of builds using more recent Intel chips, with the 1080 and getting much better gaming performance than I'm able to get.  If the chip could still OC to 4.6GHz, I probably would be content until the Ryzen 4000 series.....but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore.

Anyone else?  Or is FloRolf spot on?

3800x is a scam. Get the 3700x. I would get a good sub $200 motherboard like ASUS TUF X570 Plus if you want to upgrade to 3900x 12 core or 3950x 16 core in next year or two.

You will need to update the BIOS on X470 Gaming Plus for Ryzen 3000 ready.
