CPU bottleneck with RX 580 8gb

I have an MSI B450 a-pro mobo, ryzen 3 2200g, 16gb ram, and an RX 580 8gb graphics card. I am barely getting any GPU utilization out of most games I’m playing, unless I go to ultra or extreme settings (but then lose frames). Is there anything I can do to fix this? Or is it just a bad pairing? I’m still new to this, and any help would be greatly appreciated!

well what kind of games are you trying and what kind of fps are you getting?

The 2200G isn't the best pair obviously but it won't be as bad as you describe here.

Outer worlds, Blair witch, silent hills playable teaser (this one crashes and gives me cpu light)  dead by daylight... I haven’t tried much more than that at the moment

well to be fair, that's all your RX580 is capable of at 1080p.

EDIT: what's your CPU utlization like in games?

EDIT 2: I'm not calling the 580 a shitty card, it's actually really good. However Ultra settings are mostly really dumb. There's usually guides out there that help you maximize performance while keeping the visual fidelity high.

Okay yes, so that's what we call a bottleneck.

Lucky for you though that you've chosen a Ryzen System with B450 Board. That way you could theoretically just slam a 3950X in there and call it a day.

That's obviously not what i'm recommending but a 3600 would be a very nice upgrade for not that much money.

i'm afraid, the only way is to lower some of the more CPU intensive settings OR dive into overclocking that small CPU and especially ram. that way you can probably squeeze out a couple FPS. OC'ing the GPU won't help you here.

If you don't want to spend so much money on a CPU again i'd recommend the used market. I've seen 2700X's for as low as 170€ NEW so a used one will probably land you just over 100€/$. Step down to a 2600X and you'll still get a kickin' rig.

Right on, so a ryzen 5 2600x would work good?

Yes. It has 3x the Threadcount of a 2200G and clocks higher.

It might still lag behind in some (apparently badly optimzed) games but definitly not as bad.

Just look through a couple benchmarks on youtube of the games you play and you'll most likely also find a config that has a 2600X and 580 or similar.

A 2200g should not be bottlenecking a mid grade RX580 that severely...something isn't quite right here.

Know anything that might help?

Did you go into the BIOS and disable the igpu and the shared memory it uses? That'll make your gaming experience a bit shit if everything's trying to use the igpu because it's not as good as a dedicated card and it uses system RAM as it's vram which will be slower than the gddr5 on your rx580.

When I get back home I’ll see if it’s disabled, it was showing my full ram where before I had the graphics card it had taken away 2gb. Where would I find that in bios? I am still completely new to this, it is my first build..

I'm not familiar with the MSI BIOS but it should be pretty similar to most others, there should be a section for "Advanced config" and listed under north bridge config. At least that's where it is for me on my asrock board. If you have your motherboard manual handy (you can also Google it for a digital pdf) it should also mention where that setting is located specifically for your board. I added a pic of my bios screen that may or may not help depending on how similar yours is.

Thank you! Mine says it’s a “legacy+uefi” bios, I don’t know how to just use uefi? I can disable the legacy and do straight uefi, but I don’t know if that will screw anything up, I am kind of scared to mess with it, but the uefi bios by itself looks so much better

I'm thinking  you shouldn't have any 'shared' memory for the igpu since you are using a dedicated graphics card. Perhaps your simply running low on memory, thus severely limiting performance?

deleted due to dramatically misunderstanding the question

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

If you lower your screen resolution in game to 720p for example, and the FPS don't get noticeably better and smoother, then it means your CPU is holding you back a fair bit.

An R5 2600/2600X would solve these issues for cheap.

The 580 is a '1080' card, you should not have issues on 1080p/medium to high settings. There definitely is an issue...are  your drivers up to date?

2200G is really low end CPU,  I was suckered into getting one last year too "it has good single core performance and is great for games!"

€110 down the drain lol...
