I want to rent out my server

Go to solution Solved by Lady Fitzgerald,

I do not recommend that you rent it out. With only 1TB of storage, there won't be pretty much no market for it. Your ISP will probably not permit it (or would charge you much more for business use). You would be liable for any lost data if the server should completely fail (Raid 1 isn't much protection) or gets infected, if the server gets infected and infects your client, etc. Liability insurance would be expensive (and would be limited). Your internet speeds are too slow to be practical for most people. If your client used the server for illegal purposes, you would probably be held liable (look what happened to the original Mega). Business fees would bury you.

Hi LTT members.

I want to rent out my server

SPECS:

  • CPU: 2 x Intel HEXA Core Xeon X5650 2.66GHz (3.06GHz Turbo, 12MB Cache)
  • RAM: 32 GB DDR3 ECC (8 x 4GB)
  • HDD: 2 x 1 TB HDD SATA (Raid 1)
  • 2X PSU: 870W

Network speed:

       Main Line

  • Download: 1gbps
  • Upload: 500mbps

      Backup Line

  • Download: 1gbps
  • Upload: 500mbps

I pay around 15$ for both, both fiber, unlimited datacap, different ISPs.

Location: Romania

I have a Tesla Powerwall in case of a power outage

Any ideas where I can rent it and any advice ?

Look up your local laws as to how much responsibility you'd be bearing, if you rented the server out and someone used it for illegal activities. Don't forget to take account into the fact that you'd basically be using it for business-purposes instead of hobbyist-purposes, since money was involved, as that may affect the number or severity of any consequences.

Well when I rent it I can reroute all traffic to a business VPS with a VPN from Romania as a proxy, right ? The client will have only ip from that VPS right ?

Yea, that will be a problem with only 1 tb of storage I am thinking about buying 10-20Tb WD Red and set in a bigger raid.

You can rent a  server at Leaseweb for something like 30-40$ a month, with better internet bandwidth (multiple peerings and all that): https://www.leaseweb.com/dedicated-servers/instant-delivery

You have a home connection without minimum service guarantee, and you have IPs that are not "business" so you most likely can't host an email server on your IPs for example.

It's not worth for someone to rent a server from you, because you can't offer the minimums other companies can offer at low price due to the volume of hardware they have.

The VPS will slow your connection speeds even more, which are already to slow. If a client used your server for illegal purposes and law enforcement goes after the VPS, the business you get the VPS from will come after you or sell you out to law enforcement. Also, VPS will want to charge you higher business rates if you use it for a business or shut you down if it catches you doing so without paying the higher rates.

Investing in more capacity will cost far more than you will be likely to recoup renting it out.
