using pi hole and a vpn with router

Hi,

 

I have a pi hole working as the DNS server for my network, forcing all traffic to use it as the main DNS server. But I also want to set up an openvpn client profile on my router. I already have an openvpn server set up on one of my vps's.

 

If I do this will the traffic coming through my network still have ads blocked? Or will I need to configure my vps with the vpn on it to use a custom DNS server?
