I'm building myself a new gaming computer on black friday and i've ran into a stumbling block.

the new nvidia ampere's are "hypothetically" coming out in march of next year.

now i'm buying the rest of the computer on black friday regardless (i already got my 9900k i9 during the black november sale on newegg)

and i'm currently running a 970 which, isn't ideal, but it could last me till next year.

what are the communities thoughts?

buy a 2080 super now or wait and hope the new nvidia ampere releases in Q1?

also, motherboard suggestions appreciated :)

thanks fam

The GIGABYTE Z390 AORUS Ultra would be my motherboard suggestion. As far as the card goes you can look at it two way. You can probably grab a 2080 S this month at a discount and enjoy an excellent gaming experience now. Or you could wait for a better card to come along with the understanding you'll have to pay more for it and make do with your 970 for now. The choice is yours alone, no one can really answer that for you.

Very simple, if you are happy holding on and gaming on the 970, wait, if not, buy

They've said Ampere will launch in H1 2020, not Q1, so I wouldn't be counting on March being the launch-date. Even if it was, it could be that they release prosumer-versions then and consumer-versions would still have to wait some more months.

thanks for the feedback guys.

My biggest concern was that the new ampere cards were going to be a significant leap forward in raytracing, requiring an upgrade from the 2080 super within a couple years to fully take advantage of said raytracing.

Yes i know that raytracing has technically been unlocked for non rtx cards at this point but they certainly aren't optimized.

based on the feedback though, barring any other input, I think i'm just going to go for the 2080 super now rather than wait to game in 4K.

Much love to those that chimed in <3

Hmm unless its 100% that the cards will be released them I would probably pick up the 2080 super.. if you wait and the new cards get delayed you will prob be kicking yourself..
Also the way cards are advancing these days its prob best to plan to replace every other generation...

I am in the same boat looking to upgrade from my EVGA 980Ti Classified ... I have decided to wait until this time next year ....

Hopefully AMD will have brought some competition back to the GPU space with their NVIDIA Killer and AIB Partners will have their custom Ampere Cards out. And if Intel have entered the fray, who knows what the choices will be ......

I am kind of in the same boat myself.  I want to build myself a new system for Christmas but I am massively stuck on my Video Card choice and the fact that both Nvidia and AMD seem to have next gen high end cards coming out within the next 6 months isn't helping the matter.

Right now I am running a Ultrawide 1080p 144hz display so a 2070 Super or 5700 XT would do the job pretty well, but I am strongly leaning toward going with a Super-Ultrawide display at 3840x1080, 144 hz or even a 5120 x 1440 120 hz which is going to require me to be at least in the 2080ti range to really drive either of those monitors well.  However, I don't think I will be upgrading the Monitor until about 12 months from now.

So where I am stuck is deciding on going with a 5700 XT for $400, which will allow me very good, high refreshing gaming on my current monitor or buying a 2080ti which should allow me to run whatever upgraded monitor I decide on a year from now.  The kicker is the $700 premium I have to pay for the 2080ti....on the eve of that card likely being made obsolete by offerings from either AMD or Nvidia within 6 months.  A big part of me is thinking I should just save the $700 now and then use that money 6 months or so down the road toward buying the top flagship card of the next generation when they come out but then it feels like I would be kind of wasting $400 on a card that I will be replacing in 6 months.  I guess I could ebay the 5700 XT but that is such a pain.  It really sucks AMD couldn't get a flagship Radeon GPU out in 2019.

@Midnitewolf, i feel ya man.

I personally had a really bad experience with my first builds gpu (which to be fair was like 12 years ago) using an amd card and i'll never go back.

These boys convinced me to buy now and the benchmarks have almost convinced me to get the 2080ti.

It benchmarks as much as 20% better than a super...

the 2080 super is only like 1/4 of the way between a 2080 and a 2080ti.
