Hi ya everyone,

Straight to the point. Why don't Graphics Card producers supply a spare back-plate that fits the other way round? As it stands the air flow goes the way they want, not the way I want.

With the cost of Graphics Cards, not to be confused with GPU's, a couple of rupees would make no difference.

Because that's not how everyone else expects expansion cards to fit. Imagine trying to fit a three card slot in the top PCIe slot. It's likely going to hit the CPU cooler if it's big enough, RAM, or one of the rear I/O components.

Im with the mentaility of "IF IM NOT SURE IF ITS ENOUGH COOLING, GO OVERKILL"

PSU             : Thermaltake Lite power 550W (Gonna change soon as i dont trust this)

Hi Mira,

Begs the question, why do mobo maker stick it that close to CPU? On ATX drop a PCIe. My point in a way is the second Pcie always rated lower? Is it Mobo makers dictating to GC makers or GC makers do not want to kick up a fuss? At the moment GC's are more expensive than Mobo.

Second slot isn't always rated lower. And if it is, its still enough for most cards. Not like everyone wants good stuff.

you can buy one as low as $5-10. its not that expensive. heck iPhone chargers are more expensive.

I saw an article about this back when PCIe was first introduced, and we were moving away from AGP slots - which have the components on top. 

Their testing showed it was better to pull cooler air up from the bottom of the chassis, cool the GPU, then force it out & let convection take it up. 

Now, we have better optimized cases with wind-tunnel airflow, but the basic Thermo-Dynamics is still the same. 

If the components were on top, we'd have to pull air down into the card, try to cool it, then exhaust that hot air out in a way that we aren't recycling it. 

 

Ideally, I'd like to see everything rotated by 90°, have the back panel moved up top (or even bottom), and prioritize a bottom to top style of chassis for airflow. This would push air along the length of the GPU instead of forcing it around the sides. CPU cooling would only require rotating the cooler to match the vertical axis. 

Many GPU coolers already have heatsink fins that run lengthwise too.

They don't have to, but it's convention that they do. Everyone is expected to do something in a certain way.

 

Also the cost of the graphics card is a moot point. For one, graphics cards may not be necessary due to the system running an iGPU and the customer is fine with that. For another, there are cheap graphics cards, cheap enough that the motherboard is more expensive.

Silverstone had cases where you would rotate the motherboard 90, such as the RV01 or the FT02. They stopped doing this because in the end, it really didn't matter (https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Vertical-vs-Horizontal-Case-Cooling-89/page2)

 

People think that because heat has a tendency to rise, it logically follows that case cooling should be oriented vertically. This would be true if the computer were cooled passively. However, the GPU and CPU typically used forced convection, at which point what the heat sinks do naturally no longer matter. The air is being forced to move around at a rate that passive convection can barely contribute. Also passive convection works "harder" the greater the temperature difference is.

 

The important thing with cooling is how well your case can circulate the air in it. That's all that matters in the end.
