New SSD or not?

Hey guys, I recently send my laptop in to service because it was getting an S.M.A.R.T warning at startup and then it stop working.

Just got my laptop back 1 day ago and on the report it said (exactly) "SSD REPLACED AND REIMAGED. WTP AND ADT PASSED. BIOS UPDATED."

Does this mean they replace me with a new SSD?

Because when i check the SSD info using crystaldiskinfo and i got the below:

Name: Same as pre-service

Firmware: Same as pre-service

Serial Number: Same as pre-service

Transfer Mode: Same as pre-service

Drive Letter: Same as pre-service

Total Host Read: Pre-service 1778 GB vs Post-service 1923 GB

Total Host Write: Pre-service 2031 GB vs Post-service 2973 GB

Power On Count: Pre-service 315 count vs Post-service 334 count

Power On Hours: Pre-service 698 hours vs Post-service 767 hours 

 

Does not look like a new SSD to me, but just want to make sure.

Is this a new SSD or they simply just wipe and gave me the old SSD while wrote of as a new SSD?

Also is this even legal to do that?

Could be an older SSD. It has a ton more writes on the clock, that's like installing and wiping the SSD of a clean OS (about 15GB in size) 60 times over

Does this mean they simply just wipe the old SSD and gave it back to me? the serial code is even the same... This is truly disappointing

not "the old SSD", but "an old SSD". I dont think it's yours before, a drive popping S.M.A.R.T. warnings won't be reused as is from what I know

oh got it, but would the serial code still be the same in this case? and the power up count, power up hours, total read and write looks awfully close to "the old SSD"

They likely used a refurbished drive that they reflashed to match your original one's SN so the entire system is still consistent in their database...

I'm not sure whether you're reading the serial code or the model number (which tends to be a long chain for OEM stuff) or even the batch number.

It says serial number on CrystalDiskInfo, but could be like what @Kilrah said they re flashed it, but i am not sure how difficult or necessary that is

controller programmer isn't hard to buy or use, especially when it's your job to fix things

I see, doesn't that they can flash other informations on there as well? like power on count, hours, total read/writes?

Possibly but there wouldn't be any point bothering. 

The serial is either for inventory reasons or to avoid Windows deactivating because it sees a different drive SN.

Their only legal obligation is to give you back a working system, how they achieved that is entirely up to them.

I see, oh welll, honestly if it works i am fine, just that small itch when there's no confident that the replacement SSD is not "New"

You'll almost never get a new part off a warranty repair, they have enough parts laying around from other returned systems that had faults somewhere else.

That kinda sad to know lol.

But for a 3k+ laptop kinda expected a bit better support lol
