My nephew is building a new pc and he has a good water cooler but it's only lga1151, not AM4. He needs to upgrade his system and I'm wondering if he should get a 9600k now or wait for the 10600k.

I have no idea about the release date of anything.

EDIT: It's a Corsair H75 cooler that only has AM3 compatibility, not AM4. Some people are saying get a bracket. Do they make a bracket for it?

So instead of getting the superior AMD System and a new bracket for your cooler you decide on Intel?

At this point you should probably wait though unless you decide for amd after all

Well he doesn't need the best system. He needs something upgraded from his 5000 series cpu. And I don't even know how to get a bracket for his water cooler. Do they even do that?

It's an H75 and it doesn't show it being AM4 compatible on the box or the product info on Newegg.

Does his motherboard definitely support 9th gen? Also was 5000 series a mistype?

A motherboard that supports a 5000 series CPU does not support a 9000 series CPU.

Yeah I know, he's going to need a new motherboard either way, and we budgeted $100 for that. But his Corsair H75 cooler was $130 and it's 1151 compatible and it doesn't say AM4 compatible and we'd rather just not have to buy a new cooler since it's a perfectly fine cooler. It's just a gaming PC so as long as it's a newer i5 then he'll be fine, but if the 10600 is coming out soon then we can wait. But if it's coming out in, say, April or something then we're just going to upgrade to a 9600k

When the 10600K comes out, are you gonna say "Get this one or wait again"? And then next time you do that again, and again. its best to buy a good processor while its out. use it for a while, then upgrade when needed. Unless if the 10600K comes out next week or something.

You can get an AM4 bracket for that cooler for $10, I would do that and swap to AMD.
