Hello all,

Im an older gamer and trying to get help to make a server for hosting small groups on minecraft.  I watched a video that LTT posted about such a thing, but it is way too expensive.  Trying to get help so my son and I can make something together and play on along with his middle school buds.

any help would be appreciated

LTT's machine is only so BA because they expect quite a lot of traffic to it. That, and it's LTT and that's kind of what they do.

For a private server shared between you and a small group of kids, a medium performance gaming machine with a solid internet connection should perform well enough that you never have any issues with it.

The specs I would target would be:

  • Core i5-7xxx or better/Ryzen 3 2300x or higher
  • 8GB ram or better
  • 120GB SSD or better (this depends heavily on how many mods you plan to run. You could get by with a drive less than half that size if necessary)

The spec says that they want your upload bandwidth to be 30Mbps, but that's actually a pretty high upload bandwidth for most residential cable internet users.

NOTE: These specs are for the headless linux version, which is the leanest and highest performance option.

ENCRYPTION IS NOT A CRIME
