Retaining windows on a new system

I am upgrading my PC from i7 4th Generation to Ryzen 3500.  I have a retail Win 10 license which is linked to my Microsoft account and would like to keep the same on the new PC.

Before I switch to the new system, I wanted to be sure that things won't messed up. Therefore, I would like to get following clarified-

  1. (I know this will not work, but I just wanted to clarify) Since I have a lot of softwares installed on my present PC, I wanted to avoid a fresh install.  If I simply attach my present hard disk (which has windows on it) to the new hardware, would I be able to use the windows?
  2.  If the above does not work and I have to make a fresh install. What do I have to do before installing a new windows? Do I need to surrender the present key before I make a fresh install?
  3. Is there anything I need to take care of?

Thanks

  1. You should be able to run your computer without issues if you just move the Hard Drive to the new motherboard.
  2. To remove your license key, go to command prompt and hit slmgr.vbs /upk
  3. Don't forget to backup your files.

Specs: Motherboard: Asus X470-PLUS TUF gaming (Yes I know it's poor but I wasn't informed) RAM: Corsair VENGEANCE® LPX DDR4 3200Mhz CL16-18-18-36 2x8GB

CPU: Ryzen 9 5900X          Case: Antec P8     PSU: Corsair RM850x                        Cooler: Antec K240 with two Noctura Industrial PPC 3000 PWM

If I am able to run my computer without issues then do I need to surrender my key and activate again with new the hardware?

Probably, your computer should boot without issues.

In fact, first try to boot without removing the key and see if the license sticks.
