I can't believe it's not Android (again) - Pine64 phone pre-order now avaliable

On the net, pine64 is often known for their budget Linux single board computers and laptops, as Linus himself have reviewed before. Now the company has announced that early adopters will receive their new phone by next month. It should be noted that this is not the only non-android linux phone released this year as Purism is also shipping their Librem 5 phone at 650$. For those that are more interested in their laptops the pro version is also coming out soon.

Do you remember when It’s FOSS first broke the story that Pine64 was working on a Linux-based smartphone running KDE Plasma (among other distributions) in 2017? It’s been some time since then but the good news is that PinePhone will be available for pre-order from 15th November. Let me provide you more details on the PinePhone like its specification, pricing and release date.

PinePhone: Linux-based budget smartphone

The developer kit is a combo kit of PINE A64 baseboard + SOPine module + 7″ Touch Screen Display + Camera + Wifi/BT + Playbox enclosure + Lithium-Ion battery case + LTE cat 4 USB dongle. These combo kits allow developers to jump start PinePhone development. The PINE A64 platform already has mainline Linux OS build thanks to the PINE64 community and the support by KDE neon.

Production, Price & Availability

Pinephone Brave Heart Pre Order Pinephone Brave Heart Pre Order

PinePhone will cost about $150. The early adapter release has been named ‘Brave Heart’ edition and it will go on sale from November 15, 2019. As you can see in the image above, Pine64’s homepage has included a timer for the first pre-order batch of PinePhone.

You should expect the early adopter ‘Brave Heart’ editions to be shipped and delivered by December 2019 or January 2020.

Mass production will begin only after the Chinese New Year, hinting at early Q2 of 2020 or March 2020 (at the earliest).

The phone hasn’t yet been listed on Pine Store – so make sure to check out Pine64 online store to pre-order the ‘Brave Heart’ edition if you want to be one of the early adopters.

Thoughts:At 150$ it isn't expensive at all, but it would be verily contested by other budget phones like Motorola and Honor. It would definitely be more fun for a programmer compared to android phones.

I do miss the firefox phone.

The price is right for that phone, but I can't picture it gaining much traction outside of tinkerers and FOSS absolutists.  You'll have to either live with the built-in apps or deal with a lot of web apps.

Only 16GB of storage?  My S7 Active has 32GB, and I keep running out of space on it (despite transferring a bunch of apps/files onto my MicroSD card).  No way would 16GB be enough for me.

That's exactly what it is. They base their more "consumer ready" devices (like their PineBook) off of their dev-board hardware like this one: https://www.pine64.org/rockpro64/

Or this one with the same SoC as the PinePhone: https://www.pine64.org/devices/single-board-computers/pine-a64/

More info HERE from their blog.

No wonder Linus found it painful ?

So now what's the excuse from apple users?

"I can't run itunes, wah, wah wah....."

Apple finally abandoned iTunes with the release of Catalina.

Clearly.

It was a joke to poke fun at apple users that don't know how to do anything outside of the shitty apple ecosystem.

I've actually seen people defend itunes wishing it was never depricated despite being the biggest piece of trash software ever with literally thousands of apple users complaining about the program deleting their music among other things.

No they didn't. They're stuck with their shitty decisions forever.

Heck, I'll buy it. $150 for a Linux phone that still needs adoption isn't as bad as the $650 version.

You linked a blog that supports my statement, iTunes is gone. DJ's are pissed off, OK I get that. There was also a time when DJ's carried around a collection of CD's and I'm sure they're happy not to have to do that anymore. There are a ton of options for running old/unsupported software, I'm sure they'll be just fine.
