CPU Upgrade for VR, having trouble choosing...

Bot to thread jack at all, but... damn. 8700k @ 5ghz and 1.355 after a delid. I am starting to think I have a hell of a chip doing it at 1.300 lol. I delid my 4770k and still have the 3d printed tool, I wonder if I could run for 5.2 ghz. lol. I just don't care enough I don't think.

But yea, I read that very wrong. The OP's CPU could use an upgrade for sure.

Yep some are great some are bad. I'd say mine is average based on the silicon lottery offerings. I can get 5.1 but I need 1.4v and it's not worth it

OP - a first gen Ryzen is about 50% faster than your CPU, and it only gets more pronounced when you move to 2000 or 3000 series.

BF might have some killer deals on 2000 series chips and if I were you I'd wait a few weeks and snag one of those. My bet is a $150 2700/b450 combo.

Hello lads, hope you are having a nice day.

For the past several years I've been running a A10 7700K with 8gigs of ram. For the most part it had not been an issue but recently i managed to het a hold of an Oculus Rift and I've been noticing some stuttering and frame drops, specially when the games load certian models or the particle count increases. The recomended specs on the Oculus website put my GPU (An RX 570) somewhere between minimal and recomended so i'm more inlined to blame it on the CPU.

I want to go Ryzen since AMD seems to be killing it lately but i'm not sure which offering is going to be the best in terms of price to performance. Currently i'm between the Ryzen 5 2600 or the 1500X; i've seen them both recommended a lot but I'm not very good at comparing CPUs so i wouldn't know for sure which one is the right ticket or if there is a better option in the same price range. Also i was wondering if the VR experience would benefit from more ram? since I will be buying new ram i want to know if it will pay off to go for 16gigs.

if you have problems with VR you are most likely limited by the GPU rather than the CPU.

that being said im not sure how much processing power Oculus needs for their tracking as it is image based, for a Vive VR headset it would absolutely be sure that its GPU limited.

A 7700k is more than enough for VR. Your RX 570 is definitely the problem. I had a GTX 1080 before I got a killer deal on my GTX 2080, and the 1080 was enough, but.... almost not really. I would seriously consider an nvidia card for VR since they have some fantastic stereoscopic stuff going on in hardware, basically it somewhat reduces the impact of trying to render stereo vision vs mono like a monitor would be.

In this situation, your CPU is more than capable, but your videocard is the bottleneck my quite a bit.

Maybe a Ryzen 5 3600? It has higher single-core performance, which will be very helpful in VR.

I think you're forgetting OP has a rather crappy CPU. It's very likely a factor.

The processing power for tracking is fairly negligible. And the RX 570 is pretty capable with ASW.

The A10 7700K is not that good. It's comparable to an FX-4300 or 4320.

OOOOOOOO boy, I read that as "a 7700k, like an i7 7700k". My bad.

Yeah, had that happen before when i share specs, i should really start putting "AMD A10 7700k" instead. Although if black friday/cyber monday deals go well, i might not have that problem for long.

Mmm, i'll add the 3600 to the top of the list then, it's on the same bracket as the others price-wise. If it hits a good discount on the holidays i'll probably go for that one.

I used to use an i7 4790K for VR, with my GTX 970. The 4790K is surpassed a bit in single threaded by the Ryzen 5 2600, so I say that would be quite a good value for VR gaming. My roommate uses a 2600 for his 144Hz rig so I can vouch for high refresh rates for it, provided you've got decent ram speeds. As for a graphic card, the 970 is really similar in capability to the 570 you listed, so you might get a CPU upgrade and notice the performance just meets your standards.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

50%?? Ufff that's a nice improvement, i should be able to feel in overall use.

Thanks for the info everyone, I'll keep an eye on the 3600, if it does not hit a good enough deal i'll move down to the 2700 or 2600 and see what fits the budget.
