X79 - Linux freeze after booting

hello

i got this motherboard(see pictures) 2 weeks ago, because my Asus X79 had some issues after the years.

However i have issues running Linux. 

When i got this mobo, i booted into the Windows i had already installed, and after few BSOD it started working just fine. I have Windows 8.1 and the Windows loading screen looks like from Windows Vista but its just for a while. (the Windows load into desktop just in 2 or 3 seconds from fresh start, which is something ive never experienced and i totally like)

However, when i booted to the Linux which i already had installed, it is just crashing. Usually just in a one or two seconds. So i tried to install new one, however just once the installation process starts, it also crash. (it does not crash actually, it always just completely freeze). The Linux which is already installed is Debian 9.0, tried installation of Debian 9.0, Debian 9.1 and latest Ubuntu and had same results.

I tried some settings in BIOS, and i also tried factory settings. All systems i boot are without UEFI.

 

I contacted the seller, and he said half of his customers are using Linux systems and it works fine.

(well, he also claimed it support multi GPU, which doesnt, also said it is ATX which is not (its 2.5cm bigger then ATX, so it wont fit any ATX case), and some other things..)

 

I also have one of this Chinese X79 motherboards which has only 4 DDR3 slots, and i remember i also had some issues at begin with Linux, but i dont remember what was it and how did i solve it.

 

I dont think any of the messages which you can see on screenshots, have anything to do with the crash, i had them before and and it was working fine.

 

Do you guys have similar experience?

8x 8GB Crucial Ballistix 1.6GHz CL8

AMD R9 390x

Maybe try a different distribution? Sometimes there are problems with the default drivers shipped in the installation image.

well, thanks for response, but as i said, this error messages are not connected with the freeze issue
i will try some completely different distro, CentOS and will see

so the CentOS didnt help, same results.

 

If noone here have idea what could i do, i guess i just use their 1year warranty and ask them to check it.

if you check any x79 mobo, it most probably is going to have only 2 SATA 3.0 ports and 4 SATA 2.0 ports. This mobo which i got has 4 SATA 3.0 ports. So how did they achieved it? Well, simply by adding another controller for it. However, this random ASMedia SATA driver is so cheap, it doesnt support ATAPI commands, making all Linux distros with kernel version after 2.6, unable to operate. That was also the reason why it freeze. So i bascially disconnected everything from this 2 ports, connected them into additional SATA controller on PCI-E and evrything started working fine.

That's... peculiar. How did you figure out after which version the kernel freezes though?

Also, I'm glad that you're back in working order!
