YouTube updated Terms of Service coming on December 10.

The new terms do not change the way YouTube treats your info, and YouTube isn't changing how it uses creators' content, but it is clarifying a few of its policies.

The new terms provide links to YouTube's Policy, Safety and Copyright Policies and its Advertising on YouTube Policies. "These are the policies that underpin our Community Guidelines, and we wanted to make sure to call out this detail to you upfront in our Terms," YouTube wrote. The terms also state that YouTube may automatically analyze content to detect abuse and keep the platform safe.

The terms of service now state the specific age requirement for your country. In the US, you must be at least 13 years old to use the service -- otherwise, it's YouTube Kids for you. Previously, YouTube's age requirement was buried toward the bottom of its terms, which told kids under 13, "there are lots of other great web sites for you. Talk to your parents about what sites are appropriate for you."

Thanks to the new terms, YouTube will no longer have the right to use your comments forever. There's also more info about how to remove content and a description of why you might need to remove content. YouTube says it will be better about giving notice when it terminates its Agreement with bad actors, and it has added instructions for how to appeal takedowns and terminations.

3. access the Service using any automated means (such as robots, botnets or scrapers) except (a) in the case of public search engines, in accordance with YouTube’s robots.txt file; or (b) with YouTube’s prior written permission; 
4. collect or harvest any information that might identify a person (for example, usernames), unless permitted by that person or allowed under section (3) above;
5. use the Service to distribute unsolicited promotional or commercial content or other unwanted or mass solicitations;
6. cause or encourage any inaccurate measurements of genuine user engagement with the Service, including by paying people or providing them with incentives to increase a video’s views, likes, or dislikes, or to increase a channel’s subscribers, or otherwise manipulate metrics in any manner;
7. misuse any reporting, flagging, complaint, dispute, or appeals process, including by making groundless, vexatious, or frivolous submissions;
8. run contests on or through the Service that do not comply with YouTube’s contest policies and guidelines;
9. use the Service to view or listen to Content other than for personal, non-commercial use (for example, you may not publicly screen videos or stream music from the Service); or
10. use the Service to (a) sell any advertising, sponsorships, or promotions placed on, around, or within the Service or Content, other than those allowed in the Advertising on YouTube policies (such as compliant product placements); or (b) sell advertising, sponsorships, or promotions on any page of any website or application that only contains Content from the Service or where Content from the Service is the primary basis for such sales (for example, selling ads on a webpage where YouTube videos are the main draw for users visiting the webpage).

The part in bold more clearly states that distributing content from YouTube is not allowed unless you give full credit to the author, have YouTube’s permissions to do so, or the author’s permission to do so.

In other words: No Downloading Videos. (Without credit to the author)

 

So sites such as Yout, VidPaw, and other services that allow free downloading of YouTube videos, along with browser extensions that allow you to do so will probably be taken down or they will notify users to give credits to the YouTube videos.

So, whoever needs to download YouTube videos, do it before December 10 when the terms update.

I thought downloading youtube video's wasn't allowed for years now. (unless it's a video you uploaded)

At least that was the reason I found when all the youtube video downloader apps got removed from the play store...

You can kill a pirate and sink his ship, but his crew will always come for you and avenge him. It's useless to try and "stop" piracy. One site goes down, another one opens up. They're like spotted lanternflies, you can't kill them quick enough.

I don't interpret that clause that way. Overall it reads generally as you can only use the site as YouTube intends. It does not grant specific permission to download, other than in the normal course of using YT, or they explicitly give you permission otherwise.

Overall the updated terms make the concept of don’t download and distribute more clear to users.  Of course, as mentioned above, piracy still exists however clearer the rules may get.

This just reads to me like they are reinforcing the terms to better deal with nuisance users who make complaints about videos that don't break any rules.  You know, like the people who complain about science videos because they are anti-vax etc.  And maybe to try and deal with paid trolls and services that effect reputation.

Wow that's incredibly vague.  Under those terms they could decide to cut off your access because the ratio of bandwidth served (videos watched) to ads you've clicked is too low for them to make a profit from your existence.

And seeing as I don't have a Google or YT account, I'm not bound to that ToS either.

Not that I would ever expect things to come to it, but I doubt that would stand up in court.  Those notices are probably just there as a courtesy, and/or to cover themselves so they can say you were sufficiently notified.  I would suspect the terms themselves are worded in such a manner that your acceptance of the terms is implied by use of the site, and if you do not accept then you cannot use it.  In fairness, I don't know if that would hold up either, but that's generally how these kinds of things are written for any software.

I've purged my whole Youtube long ago, erased all my comments using a mouse script to delete comments one by one coz fuckers don't have a button to "Delete all". And been using Youtube without being signed in. Use Feedly to keep subscribed to some YT channels. I also used CookieBro to delete Youtube cookies, but have now just set Firefox to only keep them for a session and then purge them. I haven't seen their stupid terms popup for ages. Need to use this extension:

I don't think YouTube is so naive as to think this will stop people from ripping YouTube videos --  this is more to help the company take action when it or a copyright holder catches pirates in the act (say, when they repost videos on YouTube or share YouTube originals on torrent sites).

And I suspect that's that they'll be targeting too.  I would imagine there's a lot of downloading that goes on for what I would consider legitimate purposes that doesn't negatively impact the platform or the creator.  For example, archival, saving for watching later offline, cutting a clip out to make memes with, etc.  I don't have figures but I would hope and bet that most downloading is not for the purpose of reuploading elsewhere to steal revenue and views.
