Hey there,

I am EU based and have basically an unlimited budget. I was considering to upgrade my system already 9 months ago but decided against it after consulting /buildapc on reddit.

Now, 9 months later my desire to upgrade my rig has grown from day to day and I was wondering if this comes only from the fact that my system is older than 4 years and I need to have the newest system.

My main useacse is graphics / design work and AAA Games. I use mostly Indesign & illustrator with the occasional After Effects and Premiere.

I love to play Games on Ultra Settings and with my current Setup Witcher 3 maxes at around 45FPS which is a bummer. I don't want to think about upcoming AAA Games...

My current setup:

CASE

Fractal Define R4

COOLING CPU

Cryorig R1 Universal

COOLING CASE

3x Cryorig XF140

MONITOR

AW3418DW

PSU

Corsair AX860i

MB

Asus Z170-Deluxe

CPU

i7 6700K

RAM

4x 8GB G.Skill RipJaws DDR4 2400 CL14

GPU

Asus Geforce GTX980 Ti Strix 6GB

STORAGE

3x Samsung 840 Pro 256GB

I was planning on this build:

CASE

Fractal Meshify C

COOLING CPU

Noctua NH-D15 chromax.black / Cryorig R1 Universal (cant decide between the two)

COOLING CASE

3x Noctua NF-A14 PWM chromax.black.swap, 140mm

MONITOR

AW3418DW

PSU

Corsair RM850X

MB

ASUS ROG Crosshair VIII Hero

CPU

AMD Ryzen 9 3900X

RAM

2x 16GB G.Skill Trident Z Neo DDR4-3600 CL16

GPU

EVGA RTX2080 XC ULTRA GAMING 8GB DDR6 or EVGA RTX2080 TI FTW3 ULTRA 11GB

STORAGE

2x Sabrent Rocket PCIE Gen 3 1TB

What are you guys thinking about my build? Is it to early to upgrade? Should I wait for a new architecture in Hindsight for upcoming Games like Cyberpunk 2077 / BG3 and D4?

What are your general thoughts about my build?

Cheers

I would not switch to a 2080ti this late.

If your 980Ti gets you only 45fps in witcher 3, you do something wrong.

its not too late to upgrade.

it never is (unless you went from 2080 on release to 2080s on it's release then you need to chill)

16 gb ram is okay. but you do have a huge cpu and gpu so if your budget is unlimited i'd reccomend you maybe upping it to 32gb (4x 8gb sticks) unless you feel like you wanna upgrade it to even more than 32gb later then get 2x 16gb sticks.

Anything i've written between the * and * is not meant to be taken seriously.

keep in mind that helping with problems is hard if you aren't specific and detailed.

i'm also not a professional, (yet) so make sure to personally verify important information as i could be wrong.

I would try to get the 2080ti first and then see how much of a bottleneck the 6700k is. If you don't get enough FPS then, you could still upgrade the CPU later

Good Point. i could also wait for the new 3x Generation. But they will be pretty costly I guess

As always: Is there actually a right time to upgrade? I feel like I can save some money by upgrading now instead of waiting for an more expensive but newer generation. Any other thoughts?

as far as I know black friday is not as common in germany than in other countries but could help to save some money.

Saving money is not my main concern though. Having unlimited budget does not mean to spend an inappropriate amount. I would rather get some advice if a system upgrade is appropriate. I don't need to have the best and newest tech but something that will last the next five years.I dont need the next gen Ryzen or RTX if Ryzen 7/9 and a 2080ti would be a good enough upgrade. Having the newest tech is nice and all but it will come at a premium price tag I guess?
