Rather than buy a whole new MB+RAM to replace my i5 3450 what if I just bought this i7 3770 used for a hundred bucks?

It's not a new 6-core, but it would lift me into the realm of hyperthreading and boost me to 3.9 instead of 3.5.

Just now, TheGlenlivet said:

What are you using the system for?  The answer is yes it will be better, but there are some games that can use more than 4C/8T Cpus now.

Not just can, some even benefit! If OP is on a tight budget, he could just upgrade cpu. If he wants to play new AAA titles, I suggest going ryzen route.

You can get a used i7 2600K and use it to the same effect, so I suggest that.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Actually I was just reading the news in this forum and there are leaks for Intel's 10th gen coming sometime ~early 2020 so I might wait for that i5 10500 if the leaked slide is true.

As for Ryzen I'm still not entirely sold on the idea of switching to AMD. My brother had an R7 1700 and he says he regretted not choosing Intel for various reasons like not being as stable, not being as good an experience etc. He also said the system he bought had some audio issues, dunno what that was about.

Plus I like most chips having some kind of onboard graphics.

I'd like not needing to worry about RAM speed too.

Lastly all my existing CPU coolers are intel based and I don't have adapters to AM4.
