The Ripoff Mac Pro Case is HERE

nicklmg

The mechanical nerd in me kinda wants one just for that awesome front plate. That's a thing of machining beauty.

However the overall package is kinda fugly, and I'm already close to finishing my G5 Pro-to-ATX casemod, which is better looking overall. I do like how easy it is to reach everything with this one, though, the G5 is kinda annoying with only having one side panel that opens.

I'm pretty sure my purpose in life is to serve as a warning for others.

I know it's not EXACTLY the old Mac Pro case, but the standard front plate kinda looks like it, or at worst a hybrid of the two.

Yeah I've seen it, it actually looks better than I had expected when I heard "Old MP front panel on new MP everything else"

As if they care about copyright infringement of case design? Also that LianLi case is somehow really ugly, probably that ODD.

  • 1 year later...
  • 2 months later...

Oh boy has this crowdfunding campaign kicksharted the bed.  If the team wants to revisit this story there has been delays, lies, missed deadlines, empty boxes that were said to actually contain product and the company owner, in china now for like 6 months and missed his latest deadline.  EVERY time Alex Gomez is questioned in the discord server he goes into his years of experience, the delays and rising costs and assures us the project is coming along.  the Halo product of the crowdfunding campaign is the Dice-Y case and other than the factory golden sample not a single one has been seen.  the Indiegogo comments section, now 4000 comments strong, the Backer discord server has been put on what seems to be a permanent 5 minute delay between comments.  both the owner and the PR guy Matthew Thompson  "Matt- Dune" have responded to their customers in sarcastic and dismissive ways. May 28th was their latest missed deadline, missed due to alleged power outages in the region in china. The Dune team chose a "live q&a" days later to show the case assembly process.  The quotations are because the video wasnt live. it was prerecorded with the Dune teams total contribution to that "live" video being the following:

Dune Case 👋

Alex Gomez hi there

Dune Case Who is excited!

Dune Case Apologies, the resolution is 720P for premieres. 😅

Alex Gomez there is cases in the boxes

Dune Case @Brian Hough Definitely stacked up with cases.

Dune Case @Martin Eastwood Thank you for the support!

Dune Case @Cary M Approximately 100 in the first batch today, full speed from now.

Dune Case @John Schmidt Increasing. 100 is for the first day, to evaluate production. As production has operated smoothly today, we can scale up from now on.

Dune Case Dice-Y update imminent. 🙂

Dune Case Production of Dice-Y has been finalised, and underway. Remember Dice-Y is under NDA so we will not go into as much depth compared to other components.

so for 6 months in country they supposedly have 100 cases ready to ship. 100. on the 28th...no the 31st... no but the shipping labels are printed.

Thus far no user has reported reciept of any kind of tracking number or notification of shipping. there are over 4000 backers, most of them Dice-Y backers and according to Alex himself none are ready to ship with the first batch of 100.  Matt-Dune assures backers on social media that they can produce up to 20000 cases a month but that volume seems a far cry from what has been produced so far.

Also in the "live" video q&a there was distinct lack of components on the assembly line for the case including:

- No power button installed.

- No cables.

- No USB board.

- No PCI slot covers.

- Missing screws and accessories (cable ties).

- Missing dust filters.

- No Dice-Y.

Overall Dune LLC's message has always been one of misrepresent, overestimate, and obfuscate. Here is an example of every time they said they were close to deliver, direct quotes from Dunes team:

Nov 27th, 2019: "The Dune Team is happy to report that the manufacturing has started and we are constantly monitoring the production and output quality of the factory."

Jan 9th, 2020: "As mentioned in our schedule, we expect the production to be finished by January 18 2020. In the next 10 days we will be monitoring closely to make sure that every case that is shipped has no fault or defects."

Jan 22nd, 2020: "All the packaging and assembly guys are all ready on Jan 18 to put this together and ship it out in Late January."

Feb 28th, 2020: "Once we are finally able to resume manufacturing and ensure quality, we are very confident that the process will not take more than 3 weeks to finish and release."

May 21st, 2020: "we were on target to deliver the cases at the end of January 2020"

Oct 20th, 2020: "With Alex safely in China and now in quarantine, we are on track for a Late November Shipping"

Nov 15th, 2020: "We are still on track for a late November shipping."

May 14th, 2021: "the Dune Pro is on track to start shipping to our backers starting the 28th of May"

May 28th, 2021: "Backers can expect Shipping Confirmation emails starting 31st May 2021"

Since the Discord mod team was activly deleting posts users tried to link to the unoffical Dune Community server where there was no limit on comments. the Mod team responded by deleting every mention of the other server stating it was against their rules.  the offical server existed since early in the project and only had rules posted on may 29th. oh and those rules dont indicate that users cant post links to other servers.

Their PR team has pressed hard recently touting their (now missed) shipping deadline as a good time to buy.  In fact the phrase "Buy Now" is used in almost every one of their posts. They make it seem like if you purchased today youll have it shipped soon where the truth seems to be far from that. its only if you follow the link do you then discover that if you give them money, its still under the murky consumer protections of crowdfunding a campaign not actually buying a product

All in all its been my worst experience crowdfunding and I hope someone takes a look at this. @LinusTech

Im including a link to the Dune Community server since users cant generate a invite to the Backer server https://discord.gg/3gVx2uCRqx

See for yourselves the latest video from the company was awful , with every update comes disappointment and failed targets and ship dates that come and go. 28th May latest deadline missed, then was told shipping 31st and still no tracking numbers or emails to suggest this has even happened

I am also incredibly frustrated with this project. Originally my estimated ship date was November 2020, now it's May 2021 - which is in the past! I've had no update from the Dune Team to say when my case will ship.

Yesterday, the Dune Team aired a "live" factory tour on YouTube. This live video was actually pre-recorded and came across incredibly staged. The staff in the factory were stood around doing nothing or pretending to be busy. The stack of boxes which allegedly showed Dune Pro cases waiting to be shipped was very clearly a stack of empty boxes.

Later, the CEO participated in a live voice chat on Discord where it was revealed that none of the first 100 orders include the Dice-Y Panel (the new Mac Pro style one), even though they had previously said Dice-Y would ship with cases in May.

Obviously, the main reason people backed this project was to receive a case in the style of the current Mac Pro, so we can logically conclude most orders include a Dice-Y panel. Therefore most orders are NOT shipping, and they have not given any clarity on when they will.

Finally, the CEO let slip the Dice-Y panel has a 50% failure rate in production. That's astonishing. It's hard to imagine how they can fix such a high failure rate any time soon. They must be burning cash trying to fix this. I worry for the future of this project. I do not expect to receive my case, ever.

I ordered this case after I saw Linus review it... and I'm sorry I did.  And the worst part is they're still taking new orders.

I just looked like the "Live" stream video, it looks like same ppl that are making the boxes are also cleaning the base and assembling the cases.... its like 5 of them!

I really wish @LinusTech would do a follow up in a WAN Show, dedicated video, or just remove this video entirely. A lot of people, including myself, backed this project based on Linus' video and how Dune made it seem like the product was ready for manufacturing. Here we are two years later and not a single person has received their case and now they're telling backers there's a manufacturing tolerance on the plastic clips for the Dice Y Cover, something that should have and could have been corrected months ago. Yes, COVID impacted all of us, but it's become clear that the case was nowhere near ready for showtime.

I'm not blaming Linus or LTT, but Dune is still using their video for promotional purposes to get people to buy more cases (directly through Dune this time) when there's still no evidence a single case has shipped to backers and Dune themselves constantly twist the truth (they advertise they're already shipping cases, but if you look closely, say they've only shipped to their 3PL). Meanwhile, there's only been (supposedly) 10 Dice Y Covers manufactured and the "Lucky 10" backers they chose to ship cases to have been waiting for almost 3 months with not one case shipped to them. Dune has not hit a single deadline or kept a single promise as far as I'm aware. There has been nothing but excuses.

We need people like Linus to let the public know what's going on, hold businesses like Dune accountable, and protect consumers.

I would be really surprised if it's a scam. They went through the trouble of mass producing something similar to the promised product. But the team probably doesn't know how to mass produce a pc case, ensure the quality and send it to costumers in a timely manner. That's it. And they are too proud to acknowledge it. Most people aren't even angry about the delays but the infrequent status updates and the atrocious communication in general. Every single problem was blamed on force majeur, Corona, Chinese travel restrictions or something else out of their control. They are either unbelievable unlucky if not the unluckiest company on this planet or dishonest and it's most likely the latter.

Many backers have lost their trust in the company and their faith in this project. And it's understandable. It's mandatory to openly communicate delays and the reasons behind them. The status update backers received today addresses this but it once again lacks any concrete and honest information:

Quote
A personal message from our CEO

Greetings everyone,

Every backer of the campaign has shown their support and trust in Dune by backing and purchasing the Dune Pro. I am truly grateful for your support, yet at the same time, disappointed that I have not yet delivered to you. I take full responsibility for this and I am deeply sorry to everyone.

As certain expectations have not been met, you may have felt frustrated, anxious and understandably pessimistic about Dune. This is especially saddening as Dune was founded on the promise of giving you the “Power to Choose”. You chose us and so far, we have fallen short on delivering this promise to you.

There could not have been a worse time to embark on this journey. The COVID-19 pandemic has presented unforeseen challenges to everyone, both personally and economically. As I look back during this period, there are times I should have done better. From today, we will be implementing immediate corrective steps to regain your confidence in our team. This is part of a comprehensive plan to greatly improve our communication with you by listening more to our backers who brought our project to life.

I am confident, as a result of these actions, Dune will emerge as a company our backers can trust. I have committed myself to provide more frequent and reliable updates on our progress.

You deserve better, a lot better, from our team and from me. Nothing is more important than your trust. Our next Indiegogo update will include information regarding shipping dates. This will be the first step to rebuild your trust and all of us at Dune hope you will give us an opportunity to do so.

Sincerely,

Alexander Gomez
Founder and CEO - Dune

Well the name of this post is thread is SO ACCURATE! It is a RIP-OFF ! With not a single case shipped and over 2 years late and nothing but excuses from the project owner and most of the backers screaming that it is a scam or a rip off it has come true. If it walks like a duck... quacks like a duck ... it is probably a Duck! I see that Linus has changed the title to DO NOT BUY! And Indiegogo has stopped taking any more money for this project as it has been determined by them that it is not going to ship anytime soon and is probably a scam!
