HELIOS - ASSEMBLED 2015-SEP-06 - (Caselabs SMH10 | Black/Copper | EVGA SR-2 )

Looks awesome! Love the work

My apologies for not replying sooner, I was absent due to health

issues and only saw your post much later than it had been posted.

I didn't want to reply because me replying out of the blue to this

thread usually means there has been an update, and I didn't want

to get people's hopes up. ;)

In any case, thanks, much appreciated. :)

I came across this build log and read through up to this point, now I have no

choice but to register here so I can follow along with the rest of it...

Really, really awesome work, can't wait to see more!

1) Welcome to the forums!

2) Thank you very much, your compliments are highly appreciated. :)

So, since I'm here: Due to the above mentioned health issues, my

finances have had to be rather significantly replanned, which is

why there has not yet been an update, and it's probably going to

take me a while yet to get the money together as I have some rather

significant bills coming in my direction regarding college as well.

However, eventually, and if it takes 10 bloody years, I will finish

this build, and properly! :D

That's it, I'm getting the banhammer!

I'm done with non-update replies!

EDIT: actually, I'm just joking. I got to see AND TOUCH the system today, and so I will tomorrow, so it's all fine :)

EDIT:

Just so I've said it: THIS BUILD IS NOT DEAD! I've just been really, really broke for a really, really long time (well, not broke per se, but I just had a shitton of bills to pay and no money left over afterwards), which is why it's been on hold, but it'll get done eventually. Like, surely before 2020. thumb.gif

Yeah, it's pretty freakin' huge. Like, it might fit into the car, but then he can't really fit

much else in there anymore. It really doesn't come  across  very well  in the pics how

massive it actually is.

Almost, it's a VW Polo. Can't unfortunately at the moment because it's actually running and doing

work, but I intend to do that at some point when I continue working on it. thumb.gif

As do I... :D

Yes, my work has provided me with a VW Polo 1.2 TDI. Even if I can actually fit Helios, the weight of it would make my car unable to climb the swiss mountains :D

It's actually not as heavy as one might think due to the SMH10 being Alu. ;)

Also, for those interested, there's a pdf of this log as well, although it's still very much a work in progress:

Thanks! :)

I got aquainted with LaTeX for College this semester, but I got a bit bored always doing college-y

things with it, so I thought I'd practice on something else for a change. And indeed, I've logged

>220 hours at this point (and that's just the hours I actually remembered to log, not everything I

worked on it). :D

Finally, Progress!

Yay, it's not dead yet! wohoo.gif

Basically, the build has been stuck on pause for almost two

years simply because life kept interfering, primarily with

my finances. I had planned to finally do the copper tubing

this summer, but then I needed to replace my laptop this

spring and had some HDD issues in my server, so again the

funds just weren't there to do the copper loop the way I had

intended.

So I decided to switch plans and do it with Norprene for the

time being. I'll hopefully be alive for a while yet, so at

some point in some build I should be able to still realise

the concept I've made for the copper tubing, but for the

time being, Norprene it is. I didn't really feel like going

with acrylic since pretty much everyone is doing that these

days (not that it's bad), plus I quite like the look of

Norprene and think it fits nicely with the theme of the

build.

Also, I finally made some cables for the second GPU (which

I'd bought last August actually, but couldn't use because I

didn't have time to make the cables :D ).

Anyway, first things first: Got myself some pretty

affordable silver fittings, painted them in copper.

Pics!

Since I needed to deblock my CPUs, took a look at the thermal

paste imprints:

Also got myself two active back plates from AC. The second

GPU is actually a 780, not a Titan (no need for SLI in

BOINC), so the active cooling is pretty pointless, but I

went for symmetry. As usual for AC, there's quite a bit of

steel. Copperised that too.

Finally, the current loop layout on the motherboard tray.

The entire thing as it is here weighs in at a lofty 9.3 kg

(that's about 20 lbs for the imperialists :P ).

Also, painted the outside of the Raystorm's brackets in copper

for a bit of added coppery contrast:

That's it for now. Should have pics of the rig in an

assembled state in the not too distant future. It might not

be what I originally envisioned, but I'm very happy to get

this into a presentable state finally. :)

have you abandoned the copper pipe or no. The rubber looks amazing, but black powder-coated copper would look even more baller.

Man that copper is sexy

I am rather fond of it (evidently), yes.

have you abandoned the copper pipe or no. The rubber looks amazing, but black powder-coated copper would look even more baller.

For the time being, I won't be doing any copper tubing, yes. I have the loop planned

out and everything, but I'd require between 100 and 150 Bitspower fittings, plus the

time to cut and polish the tubing (I had intended to go with polished tubes, although

now that you mention it, powdercoating sounds pretty intriguing as well), so it's just

not in the cards for now.

However, at some point in some build I definitely still intend to go that route. Just

probably not in this one, or at least not for a while yet.

Yes, yes it does. :D

Thanks, I'm glad to finally be able to make this into presentable state too. And yeah,

I am rather happy with how the fittings came out as well, was almost a bit surprised

at how well it worked. :D
