Hi everyone,

I've recently bought an MSI GS65 se (rtx2060). Very pleased with it so far! getting pretty decent FPS @ 1920x1080 resolution with very high settings with the integrated display.

I am back to PC gaming after a few years on consoles, so still catching up with all of the changes and advancements... I want to buy an external display and was wondering if anyone had any experience with driving QHD (2560x1440) displays with this setup or with an equivalent gaming laptop. I've seen the FPS benchmarks and it looks like the most GPU intense games will demand lowering some settings to keep the FPS smooth at 60, even more so if I want to hit higher FPS...

From what I understand, playing at 1920 on a 2560 display is not advised, so my options are-

1. Get a 144hz 1920x1080 display

2. Get a 144hz 2560x1440 display and probably lower settings dramatically

3. Get a 60hz 2560x1440 display

I'll appreciate any thoughts or first hand experience with this - have you tried driving a QHD display with this setup? what is/would be your preference and why? is it really that bad to run a QHD display at FHD given the trade-ff required?

Thanks!

Hi everyone,

Does the laptop have Display port or HDMI 2.0? As you need that for higher resolutions/refresh rates

Probably just get the 1080p 144hz display, as it will be a lot cheaper, but won't look much worse, also easier to drive at full resolution, though your CPU may be a bottleneck around 100+fps in same AAA games due to being a mobile CPU.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

It has both a mini display port and thunderbolt.

If you plan on getting a desktop eventually, or don't need to movie the display really

in the US at least a 1440p 100hz ultra wide is ~$400, and you can just drop the render scale in a given game a bit to hit the target resolution.
