Hi all,

Been a while, at least 5 years, since I put a build together. I'm switching from Intel and am a power user (games, programming, VMs, docker etc), which is why I'm waiting for the 3950x.

Current build:

Intel Core i7-4790k

Corsair Hydro H100i AIO Cooler (CPU)

ASUS Z97-PRO Wi-Fi AC

16GB (2x8GB) Corsair DD3 1600MHz CL9

16GB (2x8GB) G.Skill Ripjaws DD3 1600MHz CL9

Gigabyte AORUS GeForce GTX 1080 Ti - XTREME EDITION 11G

Corsair RM850 80 Plus Gold 850W Modular PSU

Samsung 850 Pro 512GB SATA 3 SSD

Crucial M550 512GB SATA 3 SSD

Fractal Design Define R4 PC Case

1x DELL UltraSharp U2718Q 27" 4K

2x DELL UltraSharp U2717D 27" 2K

Planned build:

AMD Ryzen 3950X (if it ever launches ?)

NZXT Kraken X72 AIO Cooler (CPU)

Gigabyte X570 AORUS Master

32GB (4x8GB) G.Skill Trident Z RGB DDR4 3600MHz CL16

(Existing GFX card)

NZXT Kraken X62 AIO Cooler with NZXT Kraken G12 CPU Cooling Mount

Corsair RM850x 80 Plus Gold 850W Modular PSU

ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro 1TB M.2 SSD

NZXT H710i PC Case

(Existing monitors)

A few thoughts:

  • I didn't realise until writing this post that the PSU I picked is almost identical to my current one, not sure what difference the "x" designation makes though. I'd hazard a guess I don't need to replace my existing PSU.
  • I was weighing up the Master or Extreme motherboard, given the latter is double the price it didn't seem worth it for 10Gbit LAN.
  • I found picking RAM that most difficult, I can see there's faster clock speeds but lower timings. I'm not entirely sure what the best option is on this front, I did see some recommendations regarding Patriot Viper 4400MHz.

Thanks for reading, any advice would be appreciated.

RMx is better but RM is fine

Not really, for high end X570 you only really need the X570-E, Taichi, Ace or the Master.

Ryzen's good for up to 3866MHz memory since it's much preferred to keep memory data rate double that of FCLK for minimal latency, which maxes out at 1933MHz for the best of CPUs (could go as bad as 1733MHz on the 3600. tho 3950X should be binned much better so expect 1866MHz FCLK to be average result). If you get a 4000MHz+ memory kit, you'll have to do all the timings yourself after reducing its frequency.

Imo best value choices are 3600MHz CL16 kits. Whether you should get 16-19-19-39 or 16-16-16-36 depends on budget. Tho keep in mind that 4 sticks arent as good for manual overclocking as 2 sticks even if the total capacity is the same.

i'd look around for 2x16 personally, something with aes in crucial kit's would do this or better, generally for less money

do you have the old 2013 RM or the 2019 RM?

two different leagues, you could also just pick up a x470 taichi ultimate if you want 10gig

Or a 10gbe NIC. They come for around 70€ nowadays. Granted you have the infrastructure and can actually utilize it.

Dude good choice there I'd definitely go with the Trident Z Neo 3600MHz 16-16-16-36 2*16GB kit as that is a really good one and it leaves room for expansion. As for mobo it's a battle between the Aorus one you have listed and the Strix X570-E as both have a very good VRM for overclocking that 3950X. One last point is your SSD choice I'd go with a PCIe 4.0 one like the 500GB/1TB Corsair MP600. They are at a really good price now.

PS: Don't worry the 3950X will launch it will come out with Threadripper.

Good luck mate with your decision! ?

I quite like the AIO water cooler I have, so will stick with that route. I find they're less obtrusive than a big heatsink and air cooler.

Pretty sure it'll be the 2013 as it was bought in 2014.

Don't need it, ironically the house does have network ports all over it, which is unusual. Google WiFi is doing the job nicely ?.

I'll check out the PCIe 4.0 drives, cheers.

Sounds like 2x16GB is better then, I'll hunt for some sticks with low timings at 3600.
