So my father tasked me with the job of setting up a server for his work. he said that its a small office so doesnt need to be the best. But i dont know alot about servers. So i turn to you guys for some help. I would like scalability and also redundants would be nice. But i am having trouble figuring out what to go with. Should i get a rack with some server boxs like linus? but thats to expensive for a small business its not very cost effective. So i thought a NAS but will that be enough? How will i set it up for dozens of people? I thought a network switch? But again im not to familiar with all this. The reason im doing this is because my dad thinks im some computer/server nerd. Computer nerd. YES. Server nerd? No. Buut i thought hey it shouldnt be very hard why not do it? But im stuck.

How much storage is needed? How many clients are on the network at your fathers office? What budget is in mind?

Storage amount - unknown. He just said enough to last awhile. So im guessing at least 50TB. Client # - At least a dozen. Budget depends aslong as the price matches the value.

I'd get a Supermicro X9 board, dual xeon e5-2630l v2s, and a couple raid cards, and something like 6-8TB drives

I can get the mobo for about 400$. Those zeons tho are a bit hard to get where i live unless im willing to get some from china... And raid cards hmm. Those are for redundants right? This seems sort of simple enough its just putting together a normal pc almost. And what software should i be using to run this server? Are there some youtube tutorials to make sure i set everything up correctly??

You should log on to the old server and find out what Server roles are enabled / what data is on it / what 3rd party software it's running before you try to spec out a new one. Don't just throw out numbers from nowhere.

Intel 11700K - Gigabyte 3080 Ti- Gigabyte Z590 Aorus Pro - Sabrent Rocket NVME - Corsair 16GB DDR4

If you don't want a DIY project, or if power and space are a concern, synology, qnap and drobo make some pretty great little nas boxes that can fit 8 drives and use ~60W while taking up about half as much space as a mid-tower. Just make sure you populate them with NAS grade drives.

Would be good to first know exactly what that server is supposed to do... serve things, but what things? Design depends on that.

What exactly are these clients are you doing?

But really get someone here who knows what there doing. I have seen many solutions from small buinesses that turn into a mess as the person setting it up had no idea what they were doing.

Also id probably look at cloud solutions like gsuite/O365. Then you don't have to worry about server failure, updates and lots of other things.
