Currently, I have the following setup:

VM Host/Server: Ryzen 1700X, Asus Prime X370-Pro, 64GB DDR4-3000, 6X4TB RAID 6 set, various small SSDs, running VMWare free ESXi hypervisor 6.7 (mostly for self training in Linux, Windows, and other things, never has the CPU above 10% used)

Linux machine: Core i7 5930k, MSI x99a Gaming 7, 16GB DDR4-2400, NVMe boot drive, running OpenSUSE, doesn't get used much

I'm thinking of doing this:

Storage server: Ryzen 1700X, 16GB DDR4-2400, all storage except NVMe boot drive, running Windows 2016 Server Standard (already have license, currently being used for file server VM) with SMB, NFS, and iSCSI shared storage

VM Host: Core i7 5930k, 64GB DDR4-3000, NVMe boot drive, running VMWare free ESXi hypervisor 6.7, using storage through NFS and iSCSI

This would allow me to back up my VMs properly, as right now they are not backed up because the free hypervisor doesn't have the storage API enabled to do backups.

The big question I have is will that DDR4-3000 memory work properly with the CPU and motherboard?  I haven't tried it with any memory higher than 2400 so far, and I have not been able to find a memory QVL for that motherboard. Anyone out there experienced with the Haswell-E CPUs that knows if the 5930k can handle DDR4-3000?
