Above are links to my current motherboard and what I'd like to get as a CPU, currently just going over everything and wanted to troubleshoot. Would installing this new CPU with my current motherboard be anything beyond just a straightforward installation? Would I need to update anything in Bios?

Another question, I was also wondering about cooling options, right now I'm using an i5-7400k with the stock heatsink. I was wondering if just keeping this would be suitable, if not, what would be a good heatsink to go with an i7-7700k?

Any help would be appreciated.

yes

dont add K to everything, 7400k belongs to an older and much slower AMD CPU

7700 or 7700k? the K version runs higher frequency so you may need new cooler. See how well the undervolting goes with the stock cooler, only get a new one if temperatures and/or noise is bad.

How much you gonna pay for the 7700k?

If it's more than $200 you're better off on a used 1600 or 1700 and a b450

I probably misunderstood the difference. I probably will end up getting a 7700, as for the price I found it on Amazon for $315 with about a $40 increase if I buy it with a cooler bundled. I may just play it safe and get it with the cooler, unless you know a better deal?

Eh, personally I wouldn't pay that more than $100 for an old 7700.

Personally I'd jump ship and go AMD.

If I understand you correctly you are considering a 7700 with a cooler for $355. Assuming USD, for $355 you could get a 2700 for $170, a B450 for $100, and a 16Gb kit of 3200 for $80.

You'd have a MUCH more capable system for actually less money.

Ye I was also looking at a 2700 for about $160 with a cooler included. Would it still not require any updating of BIOS or software changes while remaining compatible with my current motherboard? May end up going with it now that you mentioned it.

Your current motherboard won't work with it.

You need a b450 or x470 (you can use 300-series with updates, but it's too much hassle) like the one I listed

Having to get a new motherboard wouldn't be ideal for me. but I'll definitely keep that option in mind. You aware of any intel CPUs that'd still be compatible with my motherboard while still getting some better performance compared to my current i5-7400k? Price isn't a huge concern for me as long as it doesn't get into the $380 range.

It wouldn't be worth it really - can I ask why you don't want to change motherboards?

Mainly because my current case has some space issues and I'm worried about trying to cram things around, I could probably make it work though like I said it isn't ideal for my current situation. I am looking at some other intel processors that are in the same price range as the i7-7700.

None of the 8 or 9th series will work on your motherboard and the other ones aren't worth it.

You can get a functional case for $35 and it will be world's better with the ryzen

Never buy hardware this old from Amazon. Since it's no longer current the stock is diminished, so the price is super high. A new motherboard is the most viable option, outside of eBay, so just be aware that buying the specific item you mentioned will be the worst value possible.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Have a look at used 7700k on ebay,

that will be the highest CPU you can go on your motherboard

Hello! I wouldn't recommend buying an overpriced and obsolete 7700K, it costs almost the same as 8th/9th gen i7.

Here is a better idea. You should be able to use a 6C/6T CoffeLake CPU without an issue (like an i5-9400f, which is really cheap). As a free bonus, you'll get your memory working at up to 2666 MHz.

6C/12T are also possible, but will require some more work. Btw, there are engineering samples of i7 available on eBay and such, things like QN8J (i7-8700T ES), QN8H (i7-8700 ES), etc. I personally used a few, they are OK.

in order to get these to work on his motherboard, if at all, it would need a customized BIOS and there won't be any guarantee on stability.

The 100 and 200 series motherboards do not support 8th and 9th generation chips officially.

Officially indeed, it's Intel?

The mod is quite simple and is over a year old, many proof links are provided in the guide.

Ofc, some minor skills and steady hands are required, and everyone decides for himself, but it is a fun and useful mod for any 100/200 series MB owner.

Given the thread starter's hesitance to even swap out a motherboard, i'd wager it's not something that is reasonable here.
