P-Scores refer to an internal rating given by Google to channels to rate them based on five metrics according to a video that they released on April 10th, 2019. These metrics are all combined to, “surface among the most popular channels on YouTube.”

The five metrics are popularity, platform, passion, protection, production.

Video ratings seem to be extremely important not only to an individual videos’ success, but to overall channel success. If your video is marked as a higher-rated video, it appears to have many negative implications. With this, we’ve just confirmed something that YouTube has been extremely secretive about for a very long time: the rating system for videos on their platform.

There are six known categories of age ratings for videos. For each of these, we’ve attempted to try and link which types of content would most likely fit into them.

  • Rated Y: Super safe content. Good for literally anyone, it seems.
  • Rated G: Some of the safest content on YouTube. Extremely family-friendly, no issues with guidelines, likely will get high CPMs and make your P-Score more relevant due to a boost in the ‘Protection’ category.
  • Rated PG: Safe content on YouTube. Family friendly for the most part, the occasional guidelines issue might arise, will get great CPMs, and will boost P-Scores due to a boost in the ‘Protection’ category.
  • Rated Teen: Teetering the edge of safe and not-safe. Sometimes family friendly, most of the time is deemed ‘not family friendly.’ Will usually get a decent CPM unless guidelines issues limits ads on the video.
  • Rated Mature: Generally deemed not safe. Almost never family friendly, if so, probably by error. Will get lower CPMs if monetized due to limited ad status.
  • Rated X: Never safe. Never monetized, age restricted by default, and deemed problematic altogether.

well if this is true and accurate. you tube might have a whole load of shit coming their way.

They might even loose more advertisers for misleading their users/creators on the platform

Great joke dude. I was under the impression Youtube was cracking down on content due to the adpocalypse but it's all simply targeted corporate bullshit. There's monetized porn on Youtube, pedophilic childrens videos, and a fake trending page. Youtube doesn't care at all. Google wants money and if you are trouble they will do what they can to kill you off.

I wonder if we'll be seeing a change soon in a lot of creators' videos because of this. I'm curious to hear what Linus and Luke have to say about this on the WAN show, and how this story will progress. It would be funny to see P-score calculators pop up online you could just enter in your channel, or even see trends. Maybe socialblade will integrate this.

I also don't understand why you would care, or have some sort of opinion about it. YouTube is a private platform. Yes, anyone can join it, but it's not a publicly owned entity. It is owned by a corporation, and they will do with it as they please. No one has a right to really complain about it; don't like what they're doing, get off the platform.

They guy just had the same name. There's also lots of evidence to show that people that exclusively watch CNN etc. are misinformed or know frankly nothing of import.

But FOX could've changed. It could be total dogshit now, I haven't really watched news in a few years. I do hear people complaining that some of the hosts have turned pretty left, and Greta Von Stroke is a scientologist, so by default she's a terrible human being.

They've been offering content filtering for years now. It's trivial to see that if you want to filter content by appropriateness, you must first know how appropriate some content is.

Additionally, it's been public for years that advertisers could select specific demographics to target. It's again trivial to figure that you must first know who is likely to watch what videos in order to properly place ads, and that requires knowing both the content of the video and the content selection habits of users.

 

How did people think those features worked?

Google thrives off of using your data to build algorithms. Of course there would be a rating system; how else would they manage something like YT Kids? I honestly thought this was common knowledge

The P-Score was known to exist, though maybe not popularly, before this. What happened, because they screwed up and exposed the scoring in the videos, is we now know for certain how they've tweaked the scoring specifically for the big Networks. Not that anyone couldn't guess when you get recommended Late Night programs constantly without ever clicking on them, but there's a difference between "knowing" something is true and YT giving out hard, comparable numbers.

 

The other thing the errors caused was exposing how the Ad System is throttled in various ways. The monetization icon really doesn't mean much, except the "no monetization" one. YT has some of the best engineers in the computer world, but their management is truly quite terrible. They could just be honest and finally admit that they can only care about Corporate Content because that was the agreement they actually made to end the lawsuits.

YT should probably just give up and turn off the comments sections in general. Just embrace the fact that the platform is a TV-clips and "more targeted audience than Cable" programming.

That's probably what's going to harm YouTube most in the long run. I'm continually finding my "Recommendations" feed filled up with junk I just don't want to watch, so I end up scrolling around mindlessly for a while and not watching anything at all.

 

Where as, if they hadn't been flooding my feed with their latest politics du juer, I would have seen that thing the Fermilab had uploaded on their latest findings and probably spent the next hour deep diving in neutrinos or something weird like that again.
