Trouble with a windows 10 installation. Wont instal due to a MBR partition table.

Use Hirens Boot CD. Load it on to a USB and boot from it. Afterwards open a CMD window and follow method 1 or method 3 in this guide.

Does windows need to be installed as so far there is only one drive and there is no operating system on it.

No. Hiren operates from the USB it's installed on. The reason Windows can't install is that the partition table on the drive is a very old standart and not supported when installing Windows 10. Since there's nothing on the drive go ahead and just use method 3 in the guide I linked to.

Just delete the partition. There should be an option for that behind that error message.
