Hello Everyone,

I’ve been a fan of Linus for some time now (binging videos both old and new for a couple weeks now) and after looking at so many builds, I wanted to ask for any information/recommendations for a laptop.

Some of the main things I was looking at doing were:

1. Music Production (I’m just starting out, but have a general idea how most programs work. I was hoping to use FL Studio)

2. Gaming (I’m mostly a console player but would love to try my hands at PC gaming)

3. Video Editing (Nothing too heavy, I use some editing for videos I’ve been having to do for school)

3. General use (Microsoft word, YouTube, a little of everything)

I thought after watching so many videos on laptops from MSI to Apple Macbook Pros to Asus laptops, I would be able to make a decision, but seeing so much information, I’m at a lost. My current laptop is a Toshiba Satélite C55D, so honestly any recommendations would be a blessing.

Many thanks for any help!

This is a good budget all arounder that has half way decent on-board graphics without all the power issues of a full discrete GPU. Also it’s a 2 in 1 which is convenient in my experience.

Location/Budget?

Sorry, forgot to add that!

Location:

-Mostly alternating between home setup and school. I have a decent desk setup at home, but depending on the laptop, I wouldn’t mind getting a second monitor or even a eGPU for extra boost

Budget:

- Because of school, I would say my overall max would be around $2,200, but my minimum being around $1,500 (I made a mistake getting a cheap laptop the first time, not gonna risk that again)

Looking at your budget you could go for a razer blade, it's a well built ultra book with great processing power. They are a bit overpriced but you're getting overall better build quality, portability and battery life.

If you don't care so much about portability and battery life and are looking for pure power there are beefier laptops out there from ROG and HP that offer better hardware but have lower portability and battery life, and also they are quite heavy as well due to the cooling necessary.

If you go for the razor blade or a similar ultra book you're getting an i7 8th gen with a 1660ti or a 2060 at best in your budget.

On the other hand you've got gaming laptops that are more powerful at the same price. Do, again, keep in mind that they are heavy, and thick, and the battery life on them is nothing to boast about. Here you can usually get an 8-9th gen intel processor. You get more overall storage, and up to an gtx 1080, or an RTX 2070, if there are sales you could probably have an RTX 2080 Max Q just fit in the budget.

So the choice is yours, whether you want a light, portable laptop with long lasting battery life that you can carry around easily with you or whether you want to compromise on those aspects for a significantly more powerful system.

(Also you might just want to consider a PC over a laptop as you can easily upgrade it in the future to last much more longer than a laptop)

No, you're not. You're getting a very expensive piece of shit assembled from the cheapest parts by the lowest bidders, given a miserable one-year warranty (the OEM equivalent of a middle finger to the end user) and a customer support division that won't fix anything even if it breaks with 364 days left on the warranty.

Seriously, if you value your money, do not buy a Razer.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

Thank you for the advice! One of the laptops I was looking at was the new Razor Blade 19, thought to be honest with with you, two of the main things I saw that turned me interest was the overall cooling and the build quality on them. Aside from this, they are pretty good laptops. One thing I did wanna ask (being on the topic of Razor) was the use of the Razor core to give a boost to a laptop. Would that be a viable use if, for instance, I was planning on getting a MacBook Pro or a MSI p65 and use the core or “core-like products” to give it a “helping hand”?

You could use a razor core x to improve performance but there are probably cheaper alternatives out there so keep that in mind. Not 100% about compatibility but I expect it to work with any device that has the connectivity, it might just be a matter of installing drivers. I wouldn't recommend macbooks to be honest, since 2012-2013 they always had issues, whether it is failing gpus which burn out, chips like the jtag which doesn't really have a reason to be there but if it breaks the machine doesn't work, chips which corrode to easily despite no water damage or the keyboard just not working properly in the latest ones.
