I was just surfing the web not really doing anything and it just shut off. I tried starting it up again and nothing. I then made sure I didn't bump any cables or have anything loose and still no luck. I then tested my power supply with the paperclip method and the fan kicked on so I'm not sure that's really the problem. It's  got an ASRock x99 extreme motherboard with an i7 something or other in it. I built it five years ago. Also a Rosewill 550 80 plus gold And an evga gtx 750 in it if that helps. Any suggestions for troubleshooting would be appreciated.

It sounds like your PSU blew up.....A motherboard wouldn't just die like that.  A poof and its off is PSU ya know even if the fan is spinning.

pull out the bios battery and check your manual for how to reset the bios.

it would be good to try a different power supply as well in case your power supply had something else die on it that isn't testable

that was my first thought but i dont smell anything burnt from it. i will try and get one to test.

thats the problem, i dont have anything else. i will try and get a new psu from a friend try that but if that doesnt work idk what else i can do to test.

It doesnt have to give a burn smell.  The 12 volt railing on it is most probably seen its life... Quality PSUs will go 10 years at least and then some but cost a lot.

Well right now we have no idea what it can be besides PSU.  The fact you have this problem going now, requires the first test or try at a fix and that is to try a different PSU on your system and now we can know if you have any CPU or RAM issues which you shouldn't have.  But if you try another PSU and it wont turn on still then the motherboard is dead.

Literally nothing happens. I get no lights. No fans. No power. I guess I'm building a new PC then.

Maybe it is meant to be.  Let me at least do the least and help you with your upgrade CPU mobo and RAM.  We can get you a good system right now.  I don't know what your needs are tho.  Are you primarily a gamer ?  Or do you game and push a workload on the desktop ?  We can figure out if 8 cores is enough if you do hardcore rendering or anything like that.  As for gaming the 9700k is what I would choose, unless you use some demanding 64 bit multicore apps and what not.

Thanks for the help. I do a little gaming, mostly city skylines, and rocket league. I mainly used my PC for modeling in solidworks, Photoshop, illustrator, and some 4k editing in premiere. My PC handled mostly everything I did fine. Premiere did tell me my graphics card wasn't good enough but I still got by fine. I would also notice if I had a big assembly in solidworks things would chug a bit. I think the biggest choice I have right now is do I go Intel or AMD.

Woah!  That is a big workload on the desktop you got going there.  I would defintely go for a higher core count then single core speed.  Since this is the case I would recommend the 3900x 12 cores 24 threads for 500 bucks and a Gigabyte x570 elite motherboard.  Those games are not hardcore games so you don't need the single core performance for gaming, rather you need multi core performance for those apps you mentioned.  If you wanna go Intel I would suggest going HEDT.  Wait 3 weeks for the 10980XE to come out.  18 cores 36 threads at 4.8Ghz.  You will notice a huge difference in those apps you use.  Also I would fill in all 8 RAM slots with 8GB per stick 3200Mhz or 3600Mhz if price is not much more.  Gigabyte and AsRock have already promised us new x299 boards for the X series and what not.  I think couple other companies as well.  The CPU is 1k so I don't know if that is in your budget.  What exactly is your budget ?  Also how does what I said sound ?

Sounds like AMD it is then. I don't really want to go over $1500. I don't need any new drives, I already got a psu and I'm good with all my peripherals so I guess it's just cpu, motherboard, ram, gpu, and case. Though I'm thinking of maybe building a custom case. Maybe put my solidworks skills to the test.

A good case Phaneteks or something rather is not much like around 80 bucks.  For GPU I would get a 5700XT to match the Ryzen and be a all AMD system.  For RAM a 32GB kit would suffice at 3200Mhz or 3600Mhz.  Or 2 x 16GB kits to fill in all the slots.

Just grab a Noctua DH-15 .... I would recommend DRP but that is almost 90 bucks and your not doing any insane overclocking and what not.

I know the 3900x would give me the best performance but the 3700x is $200 cheaper and would still be a big upgrade from what I had. I'm not sure I actually need 3900x

But the apps you use will benefit greatly.  Things will fly you can have all apps open at the same time with the 32GB RAM.  You will carve thru that sh*T with a 12 core CPU.  Or just grab the 3700x.  Looking at those apps I would personally go HEDT and ditch the gaming motherboards....  What is your budget for CPU price ?

Well I already have 32 gigs of ddr4 but it is old. I don't really have a budget it's just what I think is actually worth spending the money on. I have three monitors and could already have photoshop, illustrator, and solidworks open at the same time. Sure it didn't like it but my point is I'm not sure I want to spend that much more when I could already do what I needed and the 3700x will do all that and more. As a side note what is under this blue ASRock heatsink? I rigged it up outside my case and whatever is under there is making like a loud humming noise.

I deeply suggest the 3900x again for what you do.  That 200 dollars will pay for itself as time goes on and you will never get a bottleneck and what not.  Hmmm its not a fan under the ASRock ,,,, humming usually means fan but Im not shure exactly.  Is it affecting stability in any way or it just hums along ?

Its just humming but I don't ever remember it doing that. Here's what's under it.

The manual just labels it as x99

Of course it's labeled that because it's the x99 chipset. Not sure if it should hum but the fact that it does means the motherboard is getting power but isn't turning on. I jumped the power pins to make sure it wasn't just a bad switch and still nothing.
