I bought an HDMI cable rated for 4k 60hz. So Its at least a 2,0 cable. My monitor has a 2.0 port and my GPU has a 2.0b port. My confusion lies with how come I can not go above 60hz even at 1080P 60hz is the max. I should at least be able to get 120hz at 1440p (native res) but I can't even get that at 1080p.

Where are you trying to apply the settings?

I got my 1080p 144Hz monitor to actually run at 144Hz in the windows display properties.

Right Click Desktop > Display Settings > Select the monitor in question > Scroll down to "advanced display settings" (colored text like a hyperlink, not a button) > Display Adapter Properties > Monitor (tab at the top of the pop-up window thing) > Refresh Rate

Then look in your GPU's control panel for resolution/refresh rate

what monitor do you have? are you sure the monitor even supports >60hz?

AOC271QG

It can do 165hz at 1440p. I could not find a DP cable so I went with HDMI instead and thought this should be able to do what I want it to.

I know what you are saying and I know all of this and Windows only shows a max of 60hz. I can do 165hz through DP no problem but my DP cable was going bad as I was getting massive amounts of flickering and what not. So I got an HDMI cable as they were out of DP cables (or just did not have any) and went with a HDMI cable thinking it should be able to do what I want it to and now I run into this problem here.

I remember some of the older cards didn't support certain resolutions and refresh rates over HDMI. What video card are you using?

MacBook Pro 16 i9-9980HK - Radeon Pro 5500m 8GB - 32GB DDR4 - 2TB NVME

iPhone 12 Mini / Sony WH-1000XM4 / Bose Companion 20

Most likely the monitor only supports the high refresh rates over DP.

Well looking at the specs it is not, so it does make sense :)

Damn... I looked at it wrong. I am definitely taking this cable back as its useless to me. Oh well I am just going to have to live with 60hz for a couple of days until my DP cable comes in. The other question is how come I can't do 144hz at 1080P? I should be able to get that but all I get for refresh rates are 50, 59, and 60.
